Thomas Clarkson was an English abolitionist best-known for his attempts at ending slave trade in Great Britain. During his abolitionist campaign, Clarkson came across an anti-slavery work by Quaker Anthony Benezet that would ultimately convince Clarkson to convert to Quakerism. Coinciding with his conversion, Clarkson wrote and published a survey of Quakerism in America as it was at the end of the 18th-century into the 19th-century. In this book, "A Portraiture of Quakerism", Clarkson describes Quaker customs, ceremonies, doctrine, common practices, discipline, and religious expectations.

Description:
1848 US Sailor Life CAPT WILKES Expedition ANTARCTICA Exploration HAWAII Voyages
In "Lights and Shadows of Sailor Life," Joseph G. Clark recounts his fifteen-year maritime journey, chiefly detailing his experiences during the United States Exploring Expedition led by Captain Charles Wilkes. Clark shares gripping tales of the journey, including adventurous scientific expeditions to Antarctica and Hawaii, encounters with the locals in Fiji that almost cost him his life, and vivid portrayals of the rich landscapes of the Columbia River valley and California. He portrays both the exhilarating and perilous facets of sailor life, bringing to light the underappreciated roles sailors play in history and society. Through his eyes, readers are given a firsthand glimpse into a world filled with wonder, danger, and the raw beauty of the open seas.

1878 Rise & Fall of SLAVE POWER America Slavery Henry Wilson Abolition 2v SET

Henry Wilson's "History of the Rise and Fall of the Slave Power in America" was the culmination of Wilson's political platform – his desire to complete destroy "Slave Power". Prior to, and during his vice presidency, Wilson recognized that slave owners and their political advocates had too much pull in the government, allowing for slavery to become far too widespread, and Wilson, with the help of other anti-slavery abolitionists, fought to take back that power.

This 1878 two-volume edition of Wilson's "Slave Power" history was published in Boston by Osgood.

John Marshall admired George Washington greatly and sought to publish a thorough biography on the President's life and career. It was based on written records that were provided by Washington's family. One of the most popular and famous works of French literature is Jules Verne's "Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." Verne accurately describes features on Captain Nemo's submarine ("The Nautilus"), which was considered ahead of its time as submarines were in their infancy.

Note on dating: like many other Verne first editions, the title page included was issued in each edition, including later printings. This particular 1896 edition, part of the 'Hetzel Collection' printing, features an illustrated front cover – a highly desirable edition!

1890 John Milton Paradise Lost Gustave Dore Gallery Illustrated FOLIO Literature

"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heav'n of hell, a hell of heav'n."
– Milton, 'Paradise Lost'

"When Cassell saw the Dore Bible, they personally approached Dore to do Milton" (Malan, Gustav Dore). Dore established himself as a prolific 19th-century illustrated and artist and the demand for his work was escalating. Thus, this later undated edition is valuable and desirable much like many of the other titles Dore illustrated.
"Gustave Dore, it has always seemed to me, was a motion-picture art director born before his time."(Harryhausen)
