Walt Louderback (1887-1941), painter and illustrator, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Many of those stories were also printed in hardbound editions with Louderback's illustrations. Readers of the 1910s and '20s would have been well acquainted with the art of Walt Louderback, as he illustrated books by one of the most popular authors of the day, James Oliver Curwood (1878-1927). In addition to being an artist, Louderback also taught at the Art Institute. During the 1920s, Louderback lived in Europe, he was married to his 2nd wife in Paris, and delivered his assignments to New York by surface vessel. He also experimented with modernist and Cubist painting. As war loomed, Louderback left Europe with his family in May… Read More

The Patriots, a revolutionary democratic movement, also in favour of the American Independence, challenged from about 1780 more and more the authority of the Stadtholder William V of Orange. In 1785 Wiliam even had to move his court to the Southern Netherlands. But his more energetic wife, sister of Frederik Wilhelm II of Prussia, tried to force the issue by travelling to The Hague. After she was stopped at Goejanverwellesluis by the Patriots of Gouda, she made her brother raid the Northern Netherlands. It marked the end of the Dutch Patriot… Read More

Description:
A new chocolate ice product from America advertised in Amsterdam.
- Lithographed poster - André Vlaanderen (1881-1955). Het nieuwste snufje uit Amerika: Norico, choco-glace. Amsterdamsche Banketbakkers IJscompagnie (IJsco). Fine lithograph in colour. (Amsterdam, ca. 1928-1929). 67 x 36 cm.
Very rare poster, no other copy found. Sadly I could not yet find information about this new chocolate ice, allegedly invented in America. However the story of the 'IJscompagnie' has been well documented. The 'IJscompagnie' (= Ice Company) was a brand name of a company of confectioners who operated ice cream carts. This name was shortened into 'IJsco' and became the household name in the Netherlands for ice sold in scoops. The oldest Dutch 'IJscompagnie' was probably that of Amsterdam. The newspaper 'De Courant' of August 28, 1913 mentions on that day the opening of a vanilla ice factory by the 'N.V. Automatische IJscompagnie der Amsterdamsche Banketbakkers' at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal 320, in Amsterdam. The… Read More
