His art evolved through the classical European forms and his Croatian training, to a more personal style in Paris 1930s, "Rein was a painter of intimacy." These more "mature" paintings also reflected his disturbance at the Spanish Civil War and encroaching fascism from Germany. His art and life ended when he became active with the Yugoslav resistance in World War II.
