Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. 1st Edition. First American Edition. Stated First Printing. Hardcover has brown staining on inside boards, but it is covered by DJ flaps. Spine slant. Book store stamp on FFEP. $3.50 stated on DJ. DJ has some chipping along edges and corners.

Condition: VG+. First edition, second issue with tipped in title page (as expected). 327 pp. followed by two leaves of ads. Light bumping to corners and spine ends. Previous owner's stamp to FFEP and an owner's bookplate affixed to rear of first color plate. Solid and square book. Front pastedown has some cracking at hinge.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. An 11th printing in an 11th printing jacket. Chips to crown of spine and very small chip to front of DJ. Chip and tear to rear tip of DJ at the top corner. All flaps are clipped, but the original price of $2.75 is on the jacket but half of the "5" in the $2.75 price has been clipped. Ownership inscription on FFEP. A very nice copy in a like jacket.

Light toning to FFEP. Crimson topstain. A beautiful, bright DJ and solid and square hardcover.

The correspondence and reports relate specifically to the attack on the American frigate, the Chesapeake, off the coast of Virginia by a British ship of war, the Leopard, in June of 1807, and the impressment of members of its crew into the service of the British Navy. The US endeavored to protect its waters and nationals by passing the Embargo Act of 1807, thereby closing American ports and banning American ships from going to sea. "Screwed" instead of "screamed" on p.132. First issue points include errors 'recal' on first line of p.16, , Chapter XXVII listed on page 283 but appearing on page 282, 1850 engraved into vignette title-page, uncorrected "cha pter" on page 19, p. viii in preface with last "i" not aligned, uncorrected "coroboration" on page 387. Light edge wear, including tips. Some spotting to the boards. Foxing to the vignette and to some of the plates. Sporadic, light foxing to pages containing text.

Wear to tips, edges, and spine. Half-inch surface tear to cloth at foot of spine. Gift inscription on first blank end paper. Cloth has some spotting and fading.

Octavo, bound in publisher's original cloth. Tight, square, and solidly bound. Spine has been professionally re-backed and old spine label laid over. End papers replaced as well, not the original. Some light spotting to boards and edge wear to bottom boards. Text block edges have tanned. Internally clean with some tanning to end papers. It was the best-selling of Twain's works during his lifetime, as well as being one of the best-selling travel books of all time.
