London: Vernor, Hood, and Sharpe. Near Fine. 1809. Hardcover. One 5cm and one 10cm chip to top and bottom of spine. ; Hand written note laid in (initials, W. W. ) states: Academy for Grown Horsemen - twenty nine plates designed by Bunbury and etched by Rowlandson (as called for in the Directions to the Binder) . . . The twelve plates illustrating An Academy for Grown Horsemen are signed, H. Bunbury del - Rowlandson scul and are dated June 11 -1808. The plates illustrating the Annals of Horsemanship, except the first & fourth, are signed H. Bunbury del - Rowlandson - scul. And have Teggs [? ] -, dated May 4, 1808. These two works which are paged continuously, first appeared with Bunbury's illustrations in 1787 & 1791. These are the scarce plates as used in the Duodecimo (and first) edition, published in 1808. Sunned spine which, nevertheless, remains bright and rich-colored; one small scuff in one of the floral compartments. ; 3/4 leather - dark brown covers with gilt borders; and rich tan, sunned spine with raised bands and gilt floral and bordered compartments and lettering. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece with tissue guard depicting whimsical characters, and Source and Mouth of the Thames, and First and Last Bridge over the Thames. Dark blue full leather with gilt bordered covers. Raised bands with gilt bordered compartments and lettering. Dentrile borders on inside brown leather covers with brown silk endpapers. T. E. G. Tissued guarded plates that are magnificent. Includes colored maps, engravings and illustrations depicting and emphasizing the culture of the English People. Images sent on request. Text is mostly tight and fairly clean - no markings or writing. A survey map of North Chincha Island, and two tables are in the text. Rare. Charles Darwin was associated with the authors in the past.
