Two volume second edition set with two pages numbered 167 and two numbered 168 as noted; pages 263-270 repeated. Original full calf binding with five black horizontal lines and volume number on spine, heavy rubbing and worn on points with some loss at spine ends. Volume I has 1" chip to leather head of spine, front hinge quite weak and literally hanging on by threads, needs some tightening; has penciled numbers and signature inside front board. Volume II has identical penciled signature and date of 1871, binding secure. Previously owned by "R Watts" who signed title pages. Foxing throughout both volumes and age toned, a complete copy of the edition that was first to identify authors Hamilton, Madison, and Jay.
