Kempten,: Verlag der Jos. Kösel'schen Buchhandlung, 1890.. [iv], [92], [vi] pp. Small 4to. Contemporary half chagrin, spine gilt lettered. With 61 plant portraits on 41 coloured plates. A fine atlas of medicinal plants in coloured colllotype, based on early color photograph of plants. A technique rarely applied. See Nissen, BBI, 1 252 ff. The text for the foreign platns was supplied by author's brother, Max, the director of the botanical garden at München. -- (Cancelled library stamp on title and preface; lower corner of title very slightly damaged).

'Paris,: A. Desrez,, 1836.. 2 volumes: [viii], xii, 636; viii, 876 pp. 4to (17,6 x 25,6 cm.). Uniformly bound in red polished calf. A splendid and most exuberant Simier binding: Front and rear sides with large blind stamped center medaillion (un beau décor à plaque romantique, 111 x 196 mm.) showing ornamental and peacock motifs, octavo gilt rullers along the edges of the sides with gilt floral decorations in the corners; Spine with 4 double raised bands, gilt lettered and richly gilt tooled, signed 'Simier R. du Roi' at the bottom of each spine; Gilt line along the outer edges of the sides; Floral ruller along the inner edges of the sides; Blue-white marbled end-papers with repeating peackock motifs; edges gilt. ¶ Les Simier (René, 1772-1843 & Alphonse, 1796-1859), "relieurs du roi" were the indisputable master bookbinders of the Romantic period. The present piece is an outstanding example of their art. A lovely, and almost perfect copy.

Uniformly bound in recent 3/4 red morocco, spine gilt lettered; marbled end papers. ¶ Bibliotheca Osleriane 6640; Garrison & Morton 6709.1. A very valuable work of reference with ample bibliographical data. Of all the great French medical bio-bibliographies (like Jourdan, Bayle-Thillaye) the Dezeimeris is the rarest--(Partly slightly foxed and/or browned).

Contemporary marbled calf, spine with 5 raised bands; in compartments gilt decorated with floral motives (top of front joint slightly damaged; marbled end-papers, red edges. With several woodcut headers, footers and initials. BMN. I, 200.First edition, very rare. A considerably expanded edition of author's thesis (Leiden, 1762). Rouppe travelled much in the West-Indies as a naval physician for the Dutch West Indische Companie. The text is based on author's own observations and experiences, including sanitation and sanitary measures, venereal diseases, fevers, cancers etc. An important part (pp. 90-212) deals with scurvy. One of the last parts, "de morbus in portubus" is of particularly interest. Bound in contemporary polished calf, spine with raised band and gilt decorated, gilt lettered and numbered on green Morocco labels; red edges (an attractive binding with some minor rubbing and wear). ¶ A rare work, being a mixture of quackery and scientific medical bibliography. The first part here in 2nd corrected & enlarged edition was originally published in 1773 as "Methode familière pour guérir les Maladies Vénériennes", and was nothing more than an attempt to promote the use of author's nostrum "chocolat aphrodisiaque & anti-syphilique". Sewn, entirely uncut (à la barbe), loose contemporary grey wrappers (spine strip gone); preserved in modern blue blind wrappers and a wooden drop box. ¶ The very rare first edition of a series of letters by a French naval officer who was kept slave in North Africa and bought free by the canons of the Trinitarian ordre. In it the author gives i.a. a description of Meknès, Salè, Alger, Tunis and Tripoli. The work concludes with a list of 313 French slaves bought free by the Trinitarian ordre in 1785, who later that year (9th of July) arrived in the harbour of Marseille. Fine copy in pure state as issued (was never bound). With on the title and p. iii the library stamp of the "Pères Trinitaires de Marseille". A German translation was published in 1788. Playfair, Algeria 280; Tailliart 1618; ABES (the French Union Catalogus) lists only 2 copies.

With 1 folded, partly, coloured, plate, 2 plain plates, and 255 fine wood engravings in the text. Garrison & Morton, 4543. Best edition of Duchenne's first major work. Including on page 357 the first description of partial brachial plexus paralysis, upper type, (Duchenne-Erb's palsy). According to its author, this edition is "almost a new book", and contains nearly 200 more pages of text, and 151 more illustrations than the first edition. With a list of Duchenne's publications, and a valuable illustrated description of numerous inductoria. Duchenne, one of the greatest clinicians of the nineteenth century and one of the greatest neurologists of France, employed induced current in the treatment of paralysis and other nervous disorders. With a title-vignet, 2 woodcut headers and 1 cul-de-lampe The impression reads MDCLXXXVIII (1688) but that is typo error as The Hôpital des Pauvres Paralytiques - Incurables de Marseille was founded in 1700. The actual date of publication was 1753. Very rare, no records found in any library, including the NLM, BN-Opal, WorldCat, B.M., etc.

Contemporary marbled calf, spine with raisen bands (gilt decoration faded), giltletterd red morocco title-label (hinge slight worn; lower part of the spine rebacked with some slight loss of the original leather). With a woodcut title vignet and some woodcut headers.--(Small hole in the blank portion of the title; some scattered minute wormholesin the inner margin, but a very good copy of this rare work). ¶ Sondervorst p. 125; Blake, 245. Contemporary half brown calf, spine gilt decorated with rulers and buttons, gilt lettered on orange morocco label, marbled boards, marbled edges. A rare and early detailed monograph on the subject. --(A few pages with some light damp staining and/or some foxing, but a very good copy).

Paris,: Librarie Marpon & Flammarion,, (1880).. [viii], 1039, [i] pp. Large 8vo (20.5 x 27.5 cm.). Contemporary half dark blue morocco, spine, with raised bands, gilt lettered (partly slightly rubbed; a bit discoloured). Richly illustrated with 870 plates and figures in wood engraving, and 8 coloured plates (chromolithographs from the press of Lemercier at Paris). A nicelly illustrated general zoology (from the mollusc to the mammal).

Paris,: J. Barbou,, 1780.. [iv, blank], [iv, half-title & title], xxxi, 319, [i, publisher's catalogue], [ii, blank] pp. Small 8vo (9,5 x 16 cm.). A charming contemporary binding: full marbled calf, remnants of gilt rullers on sides, spine in compartments gilt decorated, red morocco title-label, gilt dotted ruller at the outer and inner edges of the sides, gilt edges. With a fine frontispiece engraved by B.J. Prévost, Bardou's printer's mark op title, several fine engraved headings and footers Very finely printed by Bardou, one of the limited issues of his series "Collections d'Auteurs Latin" printed on "Papier Bleuté". A famous neo-Latin poem in the style of Virgil's "Georgica". First published at Paris in 1665, and followed by many later edition and translations. The present edition is concluded by Brotier's (1732-1789) remarks on Rapin's poem and a history of the classical garden.

Paris,: Martin & George Jouvenel,, 1705.. [xxiv], 180, [iv] pp. 12mo (9,3 x 15 cm.). Contemporary full calf, spine with 5 raised bands, in compartments gilt, gilt lettered on red morocco label (gilt is faintly; top and bottom of spine with some slight loss of leather; sorners slightly rubbed; joints a little worn), red edges. ¶ Very rare. Second enlarged French edition (first is 1689) of Talbor's "The English Remedy" (1682). Talbor, an untrained "quack" was instrumental to popularize the use of cinchona in Europe. He made a fortune by curing hundreds of royal and aristocatic persons, including Louisa Maria, Queen of Spain, Prince de Condé, Duc de Roche-Foucauld, Charles II, Louis XIV, etc. An attractive copy, despite the somewhat worn binding, inner bright an clean.

Recent full marbled calf, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettered, edges red. ¶ Lindeboom, 270. First French translation of Van Swieten's Boerhaave commenaties related to fevers.-- (Some worm holes in the lower margin, not affecting the text). A very clean copy.

Leipzig,: J. F. Gleditschens sel. Sohn,, 1733.. [xx], 311, [i] pp. 12mo (8,5 x 3,5 cm.). Contemporary full overlapping vellum, title on spine. With one fine engraved frontispiece. ¶ This edition is very rare. Contains i.a. Von der Cholera - Sanguine - Phlegmate - Cholerico - Melancholicis, etc. --(As usual with German books from this period, pages light browned throughout the volume; though a attractive copy in a charming contemporary binding).
