Black full leather, ornately blind stamped with gilt title block and design to front board. Raised bands to spine with ornate gilt design and title block. Full gilt-edged. Frontispiece and title page illustrations. Text block pages edged with red line design. 456pp. CONDITION: spine leather faded to brown but gilt bright. Corners and edges rubbed. Paper tape repair to front gutter. Foxing and some oily discolouration marks to prelims. Foxing to memoire pages and light foxing to the rest of the text block. Good, solid, handsome book.

This book provides a rare insight into the chemical knowledge of the mid-eighteen hundreds, surrounding the new sciences of photography, food chemistry and street lighting. Marbled paper-covered boards with leather spine and corners and gilt raised bands to spine. Marbled end papers and edges. Illustrations and diagrams throughout. CONDITION: spine very worn, particularly at ends. Spine partially detached at top back. Moderate wear to boards. Very light foxing to prelims. Pastedowns bright. Title page bright. Occasional finger marks in text block but otherwise clean and well-bound.

Very rare copy. Warne's Star Series. First edition, first printing. No DJ issued. Blue cloth boards, ornately stamped with black and gilt design to front board and spine. List of Warne's books on front and back pastedowns. 345pp. Small 8vo. CONDITION: poor. boards worn; spine faded and worn at extremities; edges dusted; boards and spine attached to each other but completely detached from the rest of the book (which is still bound together). One inch open chip to ffep (but missing piece is included, in case of repair job in the future. Front pastedown and ffep very darkened; mark where something was previously stuck, on front pastedown. Back pastedown and bfep, similar condition as front. Gift inscription on page opposite title page (dated 1889). Title page has light foxing. Internally - occasional smudges but bright and readable. This pleasing little book deserves some repair and re-binding. The story begins in the height of a cholera epidemic, in London, in 1849.
