Acton had been made President of the Board of Police Commissioners in New York in 1860, a position he held until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was replaced by John G. Bergen and John Kennedy who became incapacitated in July 1863 as the mob protesting the draft began to cause mayhem (burning down the Colored Orphan Asylum, p. 117). Acton re-assumed command for the next five days and did not sleep as he quelled the riot. He himself was left with severe health problems for the next five years. John Hunt Morgan was a Confederate general in the American Civil War known mostly by his now famous Raid, an operation now known as 'Morgan's Raid'. Morgan sought to slow the Union growth in both Vicksburg and Gettysburg (both of which would become war-changing battles) by moving Confederate troops throughout the North hoping to draw Union armies toward the raiders and away from strongholds.
Morgan was shot and killed during his raid; however, one of Morgan's officers, Basil Duke, wrote a memoir on the life of General Morgan following the War – a work which provides incredible first-hand details on the raid and its influence on the Civil War.

Engraving, portrait print by Robert Thew of Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble Butler (1809-1893) in costume as Isabella in William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. The sheet measures 10 in x 7 ¼ in, with a vignette-decorated border of scenes from the play around an oval image, showing Fanny Kemble Butler in a full-figure pose. Once an illustration in a book, now disbound, with original tissue guard still attached, now torn. Slight chipping of the upper right-hand corner of the sheet, with no image loss.
