Green soft leather binding, gilt edging and detail to boards, gilt college crest to front board, red leather label and gilt lettering and extensive detail to spine. Some scuffing, a little marking, small signs of shelf-wear but overall colouring of leather and gilt detail very vivid apart from rubbing to small part of crest on front board. Binding firm. Corners slightly bumped. Book fans out a little towards outer edges, slight curvature to boards. Page edges and endpapers have attractive marbling. College prizegiving bookplate to front pastedown. Hardcovers bound in full red straight grained morocco leather with spine titles and tooling in gilt. The bindings are rubbed and show old scuffing and some stains. Hinges rubbed but sound. There are a few heavier gouges on the boards. All edges gilt. Plain gray endpapers. Text is toned and shows some foxing. Some gatherings slightly sprung. Collates complete with 18 full-page engravings (portraits: 10 in Volume I and 8 in Volume II). A sturdy set. (The author's name is not given, but this work is attributed to John Galt).

These rare volumes contatin portraits and short biographies of persons of notoriety in 17th and 18th century Britiain, including highwaymen, convicts, preachers, misers, beggars, aristocrats, murderers, rebels, etc. Each entry has an engaved plate of the individual.
Marbled boards are intact but scuffed, rubbed and soiled so as to obscure most of the marbling. End pages are still beautifully marbled. However 2 of the four volumes (# 1 & 3) have a loose first register (10 pages) that include the FFEP, title page, table of contents, etc. Volume 4 has the first engraved plate loose (see images). With a little care, these can be repaired. Due to the age of the books, there is moderate foxing and some staining to pages, but all of the text is clear and readable. Spines still show most of the gilt titles and design and are bumped at head and foot. A printed bookseller's description of the volumes is pasted to Volume 1 end paper.
