"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."

Kings, Queens, Emperors, Princes and Republics have from Biblical times rewarded their citizens and foreign friends with tokens of gratitude. Since the Crusades these have gradually developed into an institutionalized form of knighthood, which bound subjects to their rulers and cemented alliances. From the 14th century these awards have been associated with insignia. Collars, badges, stars and, uniquely in England, a garter became symbols of an Order. Made of gold and silver, enamelled and in some cases ornately encrusted with precious stones, the pieces have been a foil for the jeweller's art.The British Royal Collection has the most extensive holdings of insignia in the world - not only the wide array of British orders but… Read More

La misma se produjo al entrar los británicos en conflicto con la corona española, puesto que esta última se había aliado con Francia, otro tradicional enemigo de Gran Bretaña.

This is a very detailed and unique book with hundreds of B&W, and some color photos of naval vessels used during the time period of 1914 - 1945. It showcases a full array of patterns with narrative about each ship/pattern. Camoflage schemes used by the US Navy & British Allies and those of enemy Navies - German, Italian, and Japanese are featured in this all encompassing book.
This book is known as the most comprehensive study of the subject to date and a copy of it is in the Library of Congress.
Naval camouflage at sea was not intended to 'hide' ships, and an in-depth commentary explains the theory and development of visual deception, and the different ways in which it was intended to work at sea.
The core of the book is a listing of all the major patterns and schemes, with their colors, characteristics and function. Wherever… Read More

LIMITED EDITION. No 346 signed by author. 456 pages. Nice clean tight copy, no inscriptions, some foxing on endpapers. A Scarborough book collectors first choice!
The Rowntrees of Scarborough The background to the originator of the Scarborough history. There have been records of Rowntrees living in North Yorkshire for centuries. One particular Rowntree – Peter (who was a yeoman, in Easby during the reign of James 1) seems to be the common ancestor of many distinguished people. Some of his descendants settled in and around Scarborough. Many of them joined the Society of Friends in the aftermath of the English Civil War. Throughout the 19th century, the North Yorkshire town of Scarborough grew rapidly, firstly as a centre of the fishing industry with a small, though fashionable Spa and then with the coming of the railway in 1845, as the hugely successful 'Queen of Watering Places', catering for a much wider… Read More

Description:
These rare volumes contatin portraits and short biographies of persons of notoriety in 17th and 18th century Britiain, including highwaymen, convicts, preachers, misers, beggars, aristocrats, murderers, rebels, etc. Each entry has an engaved plate of the individual.
Marbled boards are intact but scuffed, rubbed and soiled so as to obscure most of the marbling. End pages are still beautifully marbled. However 2 of the four volumes (# 1 & 3) have a loose first register (10 pages) that include the FFEP, title page, table of contents, etc. Volume 4 has the first engraved plate loose (see images). With a little care, these can be repaired. Due to the age of the books, there is moderate foxing and some staining to pages, but all of the text is clear and readable. Spines still show most of the gilt titles and design and are bumped at head and foot. A printed bookseller's description of the volumes is pasted to Volume 1 end paper.
All proceeds benefit The Friends of the San Anselmo Library. No expedited… Read More
