Bound in printed wrappers (the title page is the front cover) and housed in a 20th century stapled cardboard folder, secured very tightly in the binding with black cloth-tape. The paper is browned and there is damping throughout. Some chipping and bending to the top and bottom corners. Rare.

Beautifully illustrated Edition in B&W. All MainText pages have text within large Illustrated Borders, also inset illustrations. Translated from the Latin by W. Benham, Vicar of Margate. Period Black Full-Leather binding with large Red & Gilt central cross on front and bright Gilt devices in corners on front & back. 5 raised bands to spine with bright Gilt foliate motif in compartments and Gilt title on brown ground. Beveled edges. Marbled endpapers. All page edges Gilt. Fine Gilt decoration on board edges.
Gift inscription on fly leaf dated 1876. No other inscriptions, pages in very good, clean condition. Splits to leather down sides of spine, wear at edges of corners and some rubbing to spine. Very small piece of leather missing at top corner of spine. Hinges broken but text block firm.

Richard Izacke (c.1624–1698) of Devon was an antiquarian and lawyer who served as Chamberlain of the City of Exeter. His history, Antiquities of the City of Exeter, was first published in 1677. As chamberlain of Exeter, Izacke could access the city's archives and using these resources he produced a manuscript history of the city, dedicating it to the city's corporation in 1665. The history was first published in London in 1677 as Antiquities of the City of Exeter. Later editions were undertaken by his son Samuel and had greatly expanded titles. The largest section of the first edition consists of 180 pages of "Memorials": short descriptions of events related to Exeter, ordered by year from 1200 to 1676. Research has shown that the entries up to 1590 were substantially copied from a manuscript chronicle in the city archives that had been written by John Hooker, the first chamberlain of Exeter, who had died in 1601. Some of the earliest known examples and as referred to by Jane Austen Blair published the first of his five volume series Sermons in 1777. It is a compilation of the sermons promoting practical Christian morality he delivered as a Presbyterian preacher. Despite the declining popularity of published religious teachings at the time, the success of Sermons paralleled Blair's success as a preacher. Though Blair's oral delivery was poor, often described as a 'burr,' he was considered the most popular preacher in Scotland. His success is credited to the ease with which the audience could follow his polite, organised style; a style that was translated easily into print. This book is in good condition with little internal damage or aging. This 'Third Part' is a supplement to the first published two volumes.
Note: In the mid-1670s, a French translation of Nicholas Sanders' De origine et progressu schismatis Anglicani libri tres (1585) appeared. Sanders attacked the English Reformation as a political act carried on by a corrupt king. Several of Burnet's friends wished him to publish a rebuttal of the work, so in 1679 his first volume of The History of the Reformation of the Church of England was published. This covered the reign of Henry VIII; the second volume (1681) covered the reign of Elizabeth and the Elizabethan Religious Settlement; the third volume (1715) consisted of corrections and additional material.
