1796 FAMED Noah Webster American READER Speller Dictionary Grammar Americana

The name Webster has become synonymous with dictionary and American language over the last century. Noah Webster sought to create a purely 'American' culture that was independent of British claim; he achieved this by creating his dictionary – a work that helped distance American grammar and linguistics from that of Britain.

Webster's American "Reader" went through numerous editions, titles, and versions, including this 1796 printing of "An American Selection of Lessons in Reading and Speaking".

Cream vellum binding. Spine replaced some time ago. The title page has been repaired. Rebacked.
Contemporary full calf, except for the damaged illustrated frontis, contents are complete and are in fine condition. The text is very legible, internally in remarkable condition for a book that is 300 years old!
By repute, this volume has a distinguished provenance. It was gifted by the Harley family (founders of the 'medical' Harley Street, London) to William Dalrymple (17 August 1772 – 5 December 1847) who was an English surgeon. He learned his trade in London and practised in Norwich, initially from his father's house and later in the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. He received attention for successfully performing the then rare operation of tying the carotid artery.
Abel Boyer was probably born on 24 June 1667 at Castres, in Upper Languedoc, southern France.

Sir William Smith(20 May 1813 – 7 October 1893) was an English lexicographer. He became known for his advances in the teaching of Greek and Latin in schools. Smith was born in Enfield in 1813 to Nonconformist parents. He attended the Madras House school of John Allen in Hackney. Originally destined for a theological career, he instead became articled to a solicitor. Joseph Timothy Haydn (died 17 January 1856), compiler of dictionaries, was well known as the author of the "Dictionary of Dates", 1841 (19th edition, 1889), and of the "Book of Dignities", 1851 (3rd revised edition, 1894). The "Book of Dignities" was a modernised form of Robert Beatson's "Political Index" but omits the lists of holders of many important offices. He also edited Samuel Lewis' "Topographical Dictionaries". His name is used in the "Haydn Series" of dictionaries, which are on the same lines as those compiled by him. This is a well used school textbook produced by Jesuit Paul Aler (1656–1727), a schoolmaster, first published in 1686 and reprinted in 1749. This copy is reputed to have been used at Eton College until it was borrowed around 1850 and then remained in private ownership until the turn of this century. As is easily ascertained from the enclosed photographs no remedial work on this volume has been undertaken for nearly 300 years which either speaks volumes for the quality of its origination or the 'godliness' of Etonians.
