The author, Sébastien Le Prestre Vauban (1633-1707), is considered one of the greatest military engineers of all time. In this treatise he used statistical data to support his argument that all taxes should be repealed and replaced by a standard 10% tax on all agricultural output and on all income from trade and manufactures. After the work was condemned by the royal government, he attempted to reclaim all the copies that he had given away. He was fairly successful--WorldCat shows only one copy dated 1707. Description:
1815 Campaign in Russia French Napoleon Invasion Scottish Ker Porter MAP Moscow
Robert Ker Porter was a Scottish diplomat who in the early 19th-century was appointed royal historical painter to Alexander I of Russia. He became close friends with the Tsar and married his daughter the princess, which kept his home in Russia for most of the first half of the 1800s. Because he was well acquainted with Russian military men, he published an important account of the events in 1812, particularly the French invasion of Russia.
This 1815 edition of Porter's 'Narrative of the Campaign in Russia in the Year 1812' includes a folding map of the French Army and their pursuit of Moscow.

Description:
The french journalist Julien Besançon had been commenting on major live events, like John F. Kennedy's funeral and the first steps on the moon for the French television station Europe 1.

While covering the events of May 1968, Julien Besancon felt the need to preserve the graffitis, that the protestors had written on the walls. These writings, many of them fragments of literature, quoting poets and political thinkers, were as spontaneous as they were ephemeral.
The Japanese edition of Les Murs ont la Parole was published in 1969, one year after the first French edition, and offers a completely different experience through the powerful combination of text and images. Beautifully designed by Kiyoshi Awazu, one of the leading designers in postwar Japan.

First edition of this "text which importance ended up appearing".
Vicaire, Manuel de l'amateur, I, 289 ; Carteret, I, 163 ; Sabin 12252.
"Text which importance ended up appearing, it is indeed a part, and not negligible, of 'Mémoires d'Outre-tombe.'" (Clouzot, p. 66)
Chateaubriand published it in 1838 to justify his activity as Minister of Foreign Affairs to the public opinion.
We recognize the dazzling style of the writer in it, the polemists' verve, the imagination of the poet. The book contains many passages from Mémoires d'Outre-tombe, Chateaubriand having hesitated for a long time to reinstate this text in his major work.
"This book is by no means void of interest; it is really written with great cleverness; and although… Read More

The struggle with Charles V:

In an attempt to gather the nobility with the monarchy and more importantly to fight against the appeal of the Order of the Golden Fleece founded by the Burgundian Dukes, Louis XI founded the French Order of Saint Michael, enacted its 66 rules at Plessis-lez-Tours during his meeting in Péronne, on August 1, 1469, with… Read More

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
The extraordinary early nineteenth century gardens of Josephine Bonaparte at Malmaison are revealed in this lavish publication. One hundred and twenty colored stipple engravings depict a dazzling array of exotic plants from around the world, while the text tells the fascinating story of how the first wife of Napoleon I came to transform a modest estate on the outskirts of Paris into a botanical and zoological garden to rival the great Jardin des Plantes itself.
Keen to have these biological rarities recorded in lifelike watercolor, Josephine engaged the foremost plant illustrator of the day, Pierre-Joseph Redoute, to paint 120 of them on fine parchment, and commissioned Etienne-Pierre Ventenat, librarian of the Pantheon in Paris, to write accompanying plant… Read More
