Description:
[Venice: Nicolo di Aristotile detto Zoppino,], 1534 First edition of this treatise on arithmetic for merchants. Sfortunati, whose dates are not recorded, was a Siena-born teacher of arithmetic who worked through much of Italy and Sicily. His book, which went into at least six more editions by the year 1568, was influential, being one of the main sources for Tartaglia's General trattato de' numeri et misure, which has been called the best treatise on arithmetic to appear in the sixteenth century. Contemporary limp vellum, modern paper spine label, later front endpapers. Quarto. Title within a woodcut border, divided into four panels. Title printed in black and red. Text with many mathematical calculations printed in the outer margins. Title a bit soiled, lower margins of first three leaves with repaired worming, lower outer corner of some leaves with an old, faded dampstain. a few light brown stains. Still, a very good copy of a rare book. Riccardi emphasizes the rarity of the first edition: "Questa… Read More

Description:
1649 Encyclopedia of Science Mathematics FOLIO Chasseneuz Catalogus Mundi

Barthélemy de Chasseneuz was an early 16th-century French jurist who, curiously, made his fame by defending a group of rats who were put on trial for destroying barley crops in Autun, France. And while the majority of Chasseneuz's works focus on law, in 1529 he wrote an encyclopedia describing basic knowledge – 'Catalogus Gloriae Mundi'. This book was a survey of every known topic with which Chasseneuz was familiar. However, the focus of the work was French heraldry and societal ranks in the 15th-century. This 1649 edition includes charming illustrations throughout including dozens of coats of arms and family crests.

1756 PHYSICS Experiments Dutch Musschenbroek Isaac NEWTON Science MAP California

Pieter van Musschenbroek was an 18th-century Dutch scientist known for his numerous physics experiments. He extensively studied the work of Isaac Newton, attended his lectures, and developed many of his own hypotheses based on those of Newton. His experiments were illustrated and thoroughly described in his book 'Experimental and Mathematical Physics'. This 1756 edition includes impressive engravings showing the details of his experiments on hydraulics, mechanics, optics, and navigation!
According to the 'Daumas Historical Science',
"Underlying Musschenbroek's lectures demonstrated with experiments was the experimental philosophy. The principal source of inspiration was Newton, but Galileo, Torricelli, Huygens, Réaumur, and others were important to this school."
This tome includes the oft-lacking folding map of the world which features California as an island!

1697 LOTTERY 1ed History of Lotteries Leti Mathematics Philosophy Holland BANNED

Gregorio Leti was a notable 17th-century Italian historian who is known for having each of his published works placed on the 'Prohibited Books Index'. Leti's final work was 'Critique on Lotteries', a work discussing the history and popularities of public lotteries, especially those in Holland. Leti discusses how the lotteries created a world of greed and false hope, as well as made the social classes even more separate. However, it doesn't seem that Leti wrote this book to denounce the lottery; in fact, he wrote of his observations of the lotteries themselves and people's behaviors.

Description:
1699 CHINA Memoirs of Le Comte Chinese Rites Confucius Mandarin Mathematics
The history of China has always been one of the most popular discussions of western culture and was a regular occurring topic of authors from the 16th- 18th-centuries. One of the most important examples of Chinese history was written by Louis Le Comte, a French Jesuit who wrote this work on his mission to China in 1688. This work, 'Memoirs and Observations', created a huge debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy.
This work covers various Chinese empires and kingdoms including the K'ang His and Kangxi, Chinese astrology and star gazing, Zodiac and mythology, Chinese boats, Mandarin costumes, mechanical inventions, and establishment of Christianity in China.
While these contents are important, the most desirable aspect of this book is the section devoted to Confucius and his teaching. A highly desirable work with fascinating contents that includes full-page and folding engravings!

(Medina BHA 5346; Palau 214290; Sabin 58993) First edition.Fray Antonio Raimundo Pascual was a Majorcan Cistercian brother. He wrote at least six works that were published in his lifetime, four of which dealt with Llull.Treatise seeking to show that the medieval Catalan thinker Ramón Lull (or Llull; 1232?-1316), a native of Palma, Majorca, had discovered the use of the magnetic compass in navigation, and that Lull's theories regarding the existence of a Western continent influenced Columbus. Llull's Art (in Latin Ars) is at the center of his thought and undergirds his entire corpus. It is a system of universal logic based on a set of general principles activated in a combinatorial process. It can be used to prove statements about God and Creation (e.g., God is a Trinity). Often the Art formulates these statements as questions and answers (e.g., Q: Is there a Trinity in God? A: Yes.). It works… Read More

Samuel Vince was an 18th-century English astronomer who was better known for his studies in mathematics and physic experiments; however, his astronomy treatise is easily one of his most popular and important works. "Treatise on Practical Astronomy" was written to aid other astronomers and physicists in their studies with special attention given to the use and care of the telescope.

Description:
This early American textbook has a quarter leather binding, with the spine in leather and heavy paper boards. The boards show considerable wear, with the marbled paper cover stripped away in places and heavily worn in others. However, both boards are firmly attached to the spine and the binding is still tight with all pages intact. The pages are heavy textured paper, some staining, but in amazingly good condition, considering the age of this obviously much-used volume. Except for some long-hand division on the inside of the back board, the book is unmarked. The best feature of the text is its content--besides all sorts of mathematic information, problems and measurements, it also has instructions/examples of all sorts of things mathematical--eg. the correct way to design a graph, calculations for different forms of weight, motion. measures of all kinds and an entire section of the appropriate forms of notes, deeds, bonds, receipts and wills--all in the erudite, charming language of the age. This is a… Read More

[8]+80 pages with figures and tables. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/4") bound in grey boards with red label to spine in gilt lettering. (ESTC T109509. Arthur Bedford, 1668) First and only edition.
Arthur Bedford was born at Tidenham in Gloucestershire. At the age of 16 he went to Brasenose College, Oxford, graduating B.A. in 1688, and M.A. in 1691. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1688. After acting as curate to Dr. Read of St. Nicholas Church, Bristol, he was presented by the town corporation to the Temple Church in 1692. He remained there for eight years, and was presented by Joseph Langton to the private living of Newton St. Loe in Somerset.
Soon after moving to Newton, Bedford projected a work on chronology, taking up a suggestion in the preface to James Ussher's Annals that astronomy might simplify ancient chronology. He held back on hearing that Isaac Newton promised a work on the same subject, and then publishing in 1728 Animadversions on Sir I. Newton's book entitled "The Chronology of… Read More
