Lazare Riviere was a 17th-century French physician who is primarily remembered for his book 'Institutiones Medicae'. This book was designed as a text for medical students covering the basics of different branches of medical sciences. This work covers physiology, anatomy, pathology, hygiene, as well as therapeutics. It should be noted that Riviere was the first physician to discuss aortic stenosis in his medical research.
This 1737 edition of the works of Riviere includes 'Institutionum Medicarum' as well as his medical observations and practices.

The author's own copy, without his signature (we acquired this from Dr. Grove's estate). The text consisted of photocopied pages (as issued) with tipped in actual black and white full-page glossy photographs. "A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the division of the Biological Sciences in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Physiology." Doctor Grove was a cardiologist in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Soft cover bound in dark brown printed wrappers with a white oval blank label (?) on the front cover. The binding is quite browned, and the text is toned. The top edge and top of the fore edge of the text block is damped. The covers are tender on the binding, and there is some splitting at the front and rear covers near the foot of the spine. Still, quite scarce. Dr. Thomas Nash Cameron (1796-1851) was from Fayetteville, North Carolina. [Thornton 1685].

No date, but preface dated July 1940 and neat owner's name, and rank, to front dated June 1941. A guide to facial reconstruction, and treating war casualties, with surgery and dentistry. Includes graphic photos and illustrations of war related injuries. Boards in very good condition. Endpapers are age toned, but the rest of the book is clean and bright; including the glossy photo paper used for illustrations. xi, 199 pages - including index. 250 x 160 mm (9¾ x 6¼ inches). William Warwick James OBE was one of the foremost dental surgeons of his time; and a pioneer in maxillofacial surgery. Benjamin William Fickling CBE was a dentist and doctor who played a major part in the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a specialised discipline. A seminal work by these two specialists.

Very scarce UK edition, in one volume by George Gregory MD (1790-1853).
Condition is Good.
Contemporary half calf over marbled boards.
Calf spine has a tear approx 1.5 cm at head and a tear of approx 2 cms at tail. Some wear at corners of boards and at joints.
Binding good but rear hinge with last three leaves weakened. However no leaves are detached, book is not shaken or loose.
Internally there is some light occasional foxing with heavier foxing/browning in early leaves and last few leaves and also pastedowns. Two small pieces missing from top of first blank. There is a signature in ink of a previous owner on title page. Some small notations (indecipherable) by a previous owner in ink on rear pastedown.
All edges marbled.
This is the very scarce UK edition.

Hardcovers bound in original red cloth. The bindings shows rubbing and wear and some of the spines and covers have scuff marks. Volume III has some damp spots on the spine and on the front cover, and the front inner hinge is starting to crack. Volume IV has some scuffing on the spine. The title page to Volume VII has a crease at the bottom corner. Otherwise the inner hinges are secure and the text blocks are sound. Illustrated throughout. Volumes I-III are dated 1907. Volume IV-V are dated 1908. Volume VII is dated 1909, and Volume VII is dated 1910. Extra shipping may be required; the is set weighs over 36 pounds.

One of his most important books was 'Aphorisms,' in which Hippocrates wrote short proverbial principles on health and medicine. He discussed the secrets to long life, the importance of a healthy diet, appropriate amount of sleep, cures for pleurisy, pneumonia, melancholia, vertigo, dysentery, epilepsy, coughs, and which season each disease is most likely to occur.

This 1694 edition is notable for containing commentary by Bernardino Genga.
