Shaw, grandson of the Harvard paleontologist, geologist and innovator in the study of Earth's natural history, was a dancer turned psychiatrist who lived in Newton, Mass. Interesting Illustrations by F. Strothmann and Lester Ralph. Those by Strothmann were meant to imitate pictographs on stone tablets but have a decidedly cartoonish and comical look. This lovely example has been enhanced even more with a signature-cut of Tove Jansson which has been neatly pasted in at the title-page. Original 1/4 cloth, pictorial boards, pp. 166(7), illustrated by the author with vignettes and numerous full page drawings. Includes the story, The Invisible Child. which is the title of the book in Swedish. Fine condition, very minor bumps and rubs to the corners incurring slight loss of colour. Free from owner names etc, exceptionally clean and bright without the normal print soiling at the rear board.

First state of text with "seep" for the word "sleep" on page 209. In excellent unmarked condition, straight and square, w/o the jacket. The author's last novel, an enjoyable mystery dedicated to his wife, playwright Lillian Hellman. It was also the basis for the classic movie with William Powell and Myrna Loy.
