Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1916 First edition ["Manuscript Edition"], publisher's maroon leather binding. Number 192 of 750 sets. 10 volumes. Each volume with frontis photogravures with numerous photogravures, halftones and maps. Extra-illustrated (as issued) with added hand-colored gravure frontispieces in the first eight volumes. Portion of an original leaf of manuscript by Muir inlaid to front flyleaf of volume I. Publisher's handsome three-quarter maroon levant morocco with maroon cloth sides, gilt-stamped lettering and floral ornaments on spine, four raised bands, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Bound by hand at the Riverside Press. Spines uniformly toned to a dark golden brown. A bit of minor wear or rubbing to some corners with a few just showing. Overall, a beautiful set. These books show some wear on some covers and spines. The bindings are tight. The set is complete in 15 volumes, volume number fifteen being the "Little Journeys Guide Book" which is often difficult to obtain.

London and Edinburgh : Printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, 1798. Second Edition. . Leather Bound. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavos. 451; 490; 487; 473; 388; 540, [1] pages. [LACKS ALL MAPS]. Hardcovers bound in original full leather. The bindings are worn and scuffed and a bit dry. Volume I has been rebacked in leather with the original spine laid down. New endpapers in all of the volumes. Although worn, the set is fairly sound. Headcap of the spine on Volume II is chipped. Text is toned and foxed. The text blocks are sound. The leaf for pages 245-246 in Volume one has a 3 1/2 inch tear running from the fore edge straight into the text. Lacks all of the maps, although it appears they were never bound in (no plate marks or sign of cut pages).

This is a three volume set that I purchased new. It has been on my bookshelf ever since. I have leafed through the volumes but otherwise it is unmolested. The box it comes in is made of cardboard and it has very minor dents or dings.

With one sheet handwritten partial translation from French to English of Gibbon's letter to Mons. Deverdun dated 20 May 1783 laid in at p. 570 Vol. I, where the letter is printed in French. No attribution to the letter, although given the provenance of the Moncure Biddle bookplate, likely in the hand of John Lord Sheffield. Volumes I & II show light wear with bright gilt tooling on the spines. Black labels on the spines. All edges marbled, and the endpapers are marbled. The bindings are sound and clean, and the text is generally clean. Both volumes have an early bookplate of "Viscount Gort." Hardcovers bound in full red straight grained morocco leather with spine titles and tooling in gilt. The bindings are rubbed and show old scuffing and some stains. Hinges rubbed but sound. There are a few heavier gouges on the boards. All edges gilt. Plain gray endpapers. Text is toned and shows some foxing. Some gatherings slightly sprung. Collates complete with 18 full-page engravings (portraits: 10 in Volume I and 8 in Volume II). A sturdy set. (The author's name is not given, but this work is attributed to John Galt).

These rare volumes contatin portraits and short biographies of persons of notoriety in 17th and 18th century Britiain, including highwaymen, convicts, preachers, misers, beggars, aristocrats, murderers, rebels, etc. Each entry has an engaved plate of the individual.
Marbled boards are intact but scuffed, rubbed and soiled so as to obscure most of the marbling. End pages are still beautifully marbled. However 2 of the four volumes (# 1 & 3) have a loose first register (10 pages) that include the FFEP, title page, table of contents, etc. Volume 4 has the first engraved plate loose (see images). With a little care, these can be repaired. Due to the age of the books, there is moderate foxing and some staining to pages, but all of the text is clear and readable. Spines still show most of the gilt titles and design and are bumped at head and foot. A printed bookseller's description of the volumes is pasted to Volume 1 end paper.

Philadelphia: H. C. Carey and I. Lea, 1824. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mos. 288; 321 pages. Hardcovers bound in 3/4 calf with green/blue marbled paper-covered boards. All edges speckled yellow. The bindings are rubbed and have some surface scuffing but are generally quite sound with secure hinges. The marbled paper is scuffed or heavily rubbed on some volumes, and Volume II has some heavier chipping to the marbled paper on the rear cover. The text is toned and has some foxing. A sturdy set in the original bindings.

Philadelphia: M. Carey and Sons, 1820. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mos. 288; 309 pages. TWO VOLUME SET. Hardcovers bound in brown 3/4 leather with marbled paper boards. The bindings are worn and bumped but sound. Corners are bumped. Spines a bit dulled with the gilt tooling rubbed. Chipping at headcap of volume one. Marbled endpapers. Text is toned and foxed. In Volume II, the leaf for page 161-162 has a 2 1/2 inch tear at the top, running into the text but without loss. A sturdy set in the original bindings.
