Description:
1666 Frankish King CLOVIS Desmarets Epic Poem Christian PAGAN French Illustrated
Jean Desmarets's famous epic poem 'Clovis' has long been considered one of the most important works of poetry pertaining to the triumph of Christianity over paganism. Clovis, the 5th-century Frankish king, was born into paganism but his conversion heavily influenced his expanded rule over most of Gaul. Scholars agree that 'Clovis' is the first modern Christian epic and contends with many of the ancient epics.
This 1666 edition is valuable, not just for its famous content, but for the inclusion of 24 exquisite engravings by Bosse and Chauveau.

Description:
Richard Robinson, 1970. Unknown. Near Fine/No Jacket. 4to - 9¾" - 12" Tall (oblong). Signed by Charles Bukowski at lower left (thiss is an actual and authentic Charles Bukowski autograph, not part of the image). Scarce original black-and-white photograph of Charles Bukowski, part of the classic series by Richard Robinson dating from the early 1970s. This particular view, landscape in format, shows Bukowski in a close-up head-and-shoulders view, in partial profile, looking thoughtfully into the distance, a rundown Skid Row-esque street scene behind him. This great portrait is one of the scarcer images from Robinson's series. Several of the images from this photo shoot were for a number of years distributed by Bukowski's publisher Black Sparrow Press to media outlets for use in news coverage (and appeared with joint credits in the LA Times, Baltimore Sun, etc.). 10 x 8 inches, framed. The image is fine; the frame has some cosmetic dings.Original B/w Photo By Richard Robinson.

Description:
1514 RARE Parthenice Mariana Carmelite Mantuanus Hagiography Badius P. Incunable

Baptista Mantuanus was a Carmelite poet whose 15th-century works were influential during the Protestant Reformation. Perhaps the most influential of his works was 'Parthenice Mariana' – a collection of hagiographic poems each of which honored the lives church fathers, Catholic saints and theologians, classical writers and philosophers, mythical heroes, and iconic biblical figures. Notable names include:
• the Virgin Mary
• Catherine of Alexandria
• Hippolytus of Rome
• Euripides
• Jesus Christ
• Hercules
• Hesiod
• Polybius
• And many more (see photos of the table for a complete list of contents)
These poems would become the basis for a new style of writing – the epic poem on religious subjects which heavily influenced Erasmus and John Milton.

This incredibly rare 1514, post-incunable printing of Mantuanus's "Parthenice" features two sets of commentary – one from Sebastian Murrho and the other… Read More

Read More
