Paris: Jean Baptiste Coignard, 1690. Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. Second Edition. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. [16], 272 pages. Nice new leather binding, Gilt spine title Voyage a la Mer de Sud. Title page and 2 other pages have expertly done paper repairs on the margins, first page of the dedication has a few old library number, no other markings. One of the very few first hand accounts of the buccaneers in the 17th century. Written by a French nobleman, Sieur Raveneau de Lussan. He belonged to a noble but impoverished family, and embraced a military career at the age of fourteen. In 1679 he embarked for Santo Domingo in search of fortune, but was unsuccessful, and joined the buccaneers under Cornelius Laurent, sailing from Petit-Goave, 22 November, 1684. He soon left Laurent at the head of a band of his own, and in 1685 pillaged the town of Realejo in Guatemala. Volume II is lacking the title page but has the half-title page. Browning mostly front portions of both books and plates, some old marginal damp stains, both books in full tree calf bindings, recased with new marbled endpapers, using original spine strips, lower half of Vol. II spine strip sympathetically replaced. This set includes the 10 botanical plates by Ferdinand Bauer which are in a custom made Solander box. Original binding, front hinge of volume I is split but front cover is firmly attached. Size of text volumes: 30 cm x 23.5 cm, Solander box: 62cm x 45cm. .

Robson; T. Payne; and Cadell and Davies [vol. I; booksellers for volumes II, II, IV and V vary]. 285mm x 235mm. Rebacked in half leather bindings with marbled boards. Ex-library Christchurch Boys High School with bookplates and stamps. Vol I and III with wormholes which have been professionally repaired with Japanese tissue paper. James Burney (1750 - 1821) was an English rear-admiral, who accompanied Captain Cook on his last two voyages. The most important general history of early South Sea discoveries containing practically everything of importance on the subject. (Hill).

Samoan writing in pencil on front endpaper. green cloth binding (probably original). The Rev. George Pratt, a missionary, lived in Samoa from 1839 to 1879 and was the first person to document the Samoan language. This book is the first edition of his dictionary printed in Samoa on the Missionary Society's press. The dictionary also contains four pages of Samoan poetry.

Original brown cloth with gilt spine and front cover titles, black moko on the front and rear covers. A full survey based on the authors observations and subsequent reading. Inscription on small slip of paper, laid onto corner of half title 'Dear Mr Barber, I beg to present my book, G.R.' Loosely enclosed a handwritten note in black ink, appears to be Robley's hand dated 10 March 96 - 'General Robley says that he has adopted as a motto to his work on New Zealand tattoo a line from Virgil Aen: VIII & altering one word.' The note refers to the custom of tattooing dying out. .
