1747 1ed English Condamine Science Voyage Equador South America Amazon Geography

Charles Marie de La Condamine was an 18th-century French explorer who studied the geography. A French-Spanish expedition was sent to South America and the Arctic region in 1735, to determine the size and shape of the earth. The two expeditions proved that the earth is flattened at the Poles. La Condamine, a scientist on the expedition, returned home by crossing Brazil via the Amazon making it
'the first scientific exploration of the Amazon… The greatest geographical event of the eighteenth century as regards South America" (Hill).
"A very useful abridgment of this indispensable work, entirely satisfactory for nearly all purposes" (Goodman).
This first English edition of Condamine's 'Journal,' was officially published as a complete account in 1751 with a supplement in 1752, but the initial French printings of this abridgement were published in 1745 and 1746 with translations soon following.

1785 James Cook Pacific Voyage Illustrated Eskimos Hawaii TAHITI Human Sacrifice
"Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it."
– James Cook
James Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for these three major world voyages. The third Pacific voyage, which began in 1776, took Cook and his crew around New Zealand and Hawaii. On this trip, Cook became well acquainted with the King of Hawaii, Kalani-opu'u. After spending time in the South Pacific, Cook also took his ship northward to the Aleutian Islands reaching to the Arctic Circle. Cook eventually died upon his return to Hawaii, after angering the King of Hawaii.
The events of this voyage became quite popular in the western world, much in part to the narrative that Cook himself wrote concerning the journey.
This 1785 edition of the third voyage was stunningly bound with all four volumes bound in two impressive tomes. In it, authors describe Cook's experiences in the Arctic Circle and the Pacific Ocean and his voyage… Read More

1826 AFRICA Denham Travels in Sierra Leonne SLAVE Rescue MAPS Sahara Desert 2v

Dixon Denham was a 19th-century English explorer who is best known for his short-lived career as governor of Sierra Leonne. In 1822, Denham embarked upon an African voyage with Scottish explorer Hugh Clapperton. While there, Denham and crew encountered numerous slave-trade exploits and did their part to rescue slaves. Following the mission, Denham aided the British plan to help settle rescued slaves in England.

The narrative of Denham and Clapperton's voyage was published by Murray in a fine, two-volume work filled with impressive full-page engravings depicting local tribes and people groups, culture and dress, architecture, and African landscapes. Note the hand-colored engraving of a desert oasis in this 1826 edition. This edition also includes remarkable folding maps!
