Review this book!
The Dead Husband is the seventh novel by American author, Carter Wilson. The house Logan Yates owns at 1734 Rum Hill Road in Bury, New Hampshire is the last place that Rose Yates wants to bring her eleven-year-old son, Max. it's the scene of a traumatic event that, twenty years earlier, saw her escape to college in another state, estranged from her father and older sister, Cora.
But now her husband is dead, and despite her fledgling career as a mystery novelist, she is virtually penniless, giving her no choice. She reluctantly returns to her childhood home, puts her unhappy son into the local prep school, and takes a job in the town's boutique grocer.
Milwaukee police detective Colin Pearson has taken over a presumed suicide case from a retiring detective, but he's not convinced that Riley McKay's ingestion of sleeping pills and alcohol was intentional or accidental. His intuition tells him it's not so straightforward and, after reading the third novel by a certain J.L. Sharp, becomes convinced that it is murder.
J.L. Sharp is the name under which Rose Yates writes, and shortly after her husband's death, Rose Yates has quit Milwaukee and fled to New Hampshire. And while Meg Pearson, whose opinion and insight her husband values highly, isn't convinced the wife did it, Colin has leave to travel to Bury to wrap the case up. He has questions for Rose Yates.
When Cora reads the advance copy of Rose's fifth novel, her objection to a certain chapter is vociferous: dangerously close to what happened before. With this on her mind when Colin Pearson turns up, a chance remark Rose makes has him looking into past events in Bury: the disappearance of sixteen-year-old Caleb Benner some twenty-two years earlier, in particular, piques his interest.
This is a gripping mystery novel that keep the reader guessing right up to the final chapters, and the chilling behaviour of certain characters will likely leave the reader gasping. The resolution is satisfying even if certain aspects are left ambiguous. A dark and twisted page-turner.
