About This Item

Annapolis, MD: Naval Inst Pr, 1984. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Classic Clancy novel in which a Soviet submarine crew attempts to defect to the United States. First edition, seventh printing with number line sequence 10 thru 7. Book is ex-library with the residue of a bookplate on the front free endpaper. There is also a 1" x 1/2" stamp reading "resale books" on the front and rear free endpapers. The book has been read, but the pages remain crisp, clean, and white. There may be a dog-eared page or two, but otherwise there is no writing, marks, or underlining. No remainder marks. Only very, very slight foxing to the textblock edges. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true, and the corners are square. Dust jacket is not price-clipped and remains in remarkable condition with minimal shelf wear, though it does bear a library sticker. This collectible, very good, first edition/seventh printing copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Synopsis

Published in 1984, The Hunt for Red October follows a Soviet submarine captain who defies orders and charts a course for the United States. Unclear of his motives and fearing a nuclear launch, the protagonist Jack Ryan attempts to track the nearly untraceable vessel as it nears the east coast. The basis for a blockbuster hollywood film of the same title, The Hunt for the Red October catapulted Tom Clancy from insurance salesman to one of the most popular writers of his generation. After being rejected by several mainstream publishers, Clancy submitted the book to the Naval Institute Press and was reportedly surprised at it's acceptance. The publisher, which had never published a work of fiction before printed only 5000 copies in the first run, making the first printing rather scarce.
