The Outsider and Others

LOVECRAFT, H.P

Sauk City: Arkham House, 1939. First Edition; 1200 copies printed; a fine copy in a dust jacket with minor wear and tear and a quarter-inch of chipping along the foot of the spine. The back flap has been inscribed by the dust jacket designer, Virgil Finlay: “This jacket is a photographic composite of early Weird Tales drawings, probably only one or two were for H.P.L. stories - I wish I might have found time for more of his work which I did admire. Virgil Finlay.” [With] Another copy. First Edition. Near fine. Inscribed at Christmas, 1939 by co-publisher Donald Wandrei. In the apparently unique green proof jacket (very minor wear and soiling); printed without text. Included with these copies are several remarkable and important letters and ephemeral pieces. In a 1937 letter, Howard Wandrei (brother of Donald) writes Virgil Finlay about his own fantasy drawings, announcing that he is to do the artwork for the collected edition of Lovecraft (what became The Outsider and Others). In a one page typed letter, signed, to Finlay, dated 5 October [1939], Derleth writes, “Don tells me you are at work on a cover for The Ousider and Others. I am delighted to know it, and I am sure that you will pay adequate tribute to HPL in your work on the jacket of his first major book...Don and I stand to divide the loss of circa $1500...I am anxious to see the jacket design when it is finished...” In a one page, typed letter, signed, and dated Nov. 14, 1939, co-publisher Donald Wandrei writes Virgil Finlay regarding the above proof dust jacket and the decision to issue the final one in blue, “...The green was a particularly detestable and odious color...” He discusses at some length why black was eliminated as well. A carbon of a letter from the manufacturer to Derleth discusses these problems as well as some difficulties with the binding. In addition, there is a typed letter from Derleth to Mrs. Eddy about the book and her husband’s Weird Tales contributions. There are two announcements from Derleth and Wandrei for the book; a duplicated one is clearly a preliminary effort and does not mention the future publisher, Arkham House, and begs for subscribers; a one page type-set announcement is a more professional presentation and refers to Arkham House.

The Outsider and Others ---in Original Dustjacket ( Contains: Supernatural Horror in Literature; Call of Cthulhu; The Shunned House; Cats of Ulthar; Dagon; At the Mountains of Madness; Pickman's Model; Shadow Over Innsmouth; Dunwich Horror, etc)

Lovecraft, H.P. ( Howard Phillips ), Edited By August Derleth and Donald Wandrei Who Also Write the Introduction

Sauk City, Wisconsin: Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1939, 1st edition, First Printing, 1939. ----------hard cover, a great copy, black cloth, wee bit of rubbing to lower edge of boards and corners, corners are not bumped, a 1/8" nick to the cloth at the center of the upper spine tip (really quite small), some offset to verso of the boards, book is completely square and tight and does not have any finger marks or rubbing to the cloth on the boards and spine, top edge of text block is dusty, overall a close to Near Fine copy but I'll call this Very Good+ because of that tiny nick to the cloth, this copy has TWO DUSTJACKETS, this copy has the original dustjacket which is Good only and has been price clipped, the dustjacket has numerous chips and tears with some loss along the extremities, the upper corner of the front panel of the dustjacket has had a 2" square loss affecting the "E" & "R" in Outsider, I have lasered that portion from another jacket and laid it in place with some archival tape so visually this looks much more appealing, the verso of the dustjacket has had a brown paper backing attached most of which I was able to remove, however there are still portions that remain glued to the verso of the jacket, the brown paper backing does not have any show through to the front of the dustjacket, a bit of cello tape at upper spine tip is barely noticeable, please ask for additional scans of any portion of the book or dustjacket that you wish to see, -----as well this copy has a FINE facsimile copy of the DUSTJACKET which makes this book look absolutely brilliant on the shelf, ------in spite of the availability of many 1st editions online (making many authors like Hemingway and Steinbeck seem almost commonplace) the first two Arkham House volumes of Lovecraft writings ( The Outsider and Beyond the Wall of Sleep ) remain elusve, ----------this collection contains: Howard Phillips Lovecraft: OUTSIDER by August derleth and Donald Wandrei; and the following stories: Dagon; Polaris; Celephais; Hypnos; The Cats of Ulthar; The Strange High House in the Mist; The Statement of Randolph carter; The Silver Key; Through the Gates of the Silver Key; The Outsider; The Music of Erich Zann; The rats in the Walls; Cool Air; He; The Horror at red Hook; The Temple; Arthur Jermyn; The Picture in the House; The festival; The Terrible Old man; The Tomb; The Shunned House; In The Vault; Pickman's Model; The haunter of the dark; The Dreams in the Witch-House; The Thing on the Doorstep; The Nameless City; The Lurking Fear; The Call of Cthulhu; The Colour Out of Space; The Dunwich Horror; At the Mountains of Madness; The Shadow Out of Time; The Shadow over Innsmouth; The Whisperer in darkness, and the essay Supernatural Horror in Literature, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo ///NOT SIGNED ---GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE///. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good+ ( see Description )/Good (see description). Illus. by Virgil Finlay Cover Art. Price Clipped Jacket.
