The Stand

By King, Stephen

The Stand is a post-apocalyptic horror/fantasy novel by American author Stephen King. It re-works the scenario in his earlier short story, Night Surf. The novel was originally published in 1978 and was later re-released in 1990 as The Stand: The Complete & Uncut Edition; King restored some text originally cut for brevity, added and revised sections, changed the setting of the story from 1985 to 1990, and updated a few pop culture references accordingly.

The Stand

King, Stephen

New York: Doubleday. F/F. 1978. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 1st edition/1st printing. Stated First Edition, with the proper T39 code at the lower gutter of the last text page. SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the front end page: 'For Dan, Best, Stephen King 8/22/80'. Fine book: unread and 'very' tight, straight, clean, unworn binding edges and corners, the gilt on the spine is bright and sharp, and the spine itself has none of the concavity or creasing you normally find with this very thick book when it has been read. The page edges are clean, binding corners sharp. The only thing I can find wrong with it at all is that the cloth at the upper spine end has a bit of flexibility to it but isn't limp or crushed. The Fine dustjacket has had 'no' restoration; it is price intact, crisp, clean and unfaded with no chips or tears; it does have an almost unnoticeable very thin vertical fold line to the front flap. This book is most of King fans' favorite, and rightly so. It is a superbly written book about an after-the-apocalypse world when a plague escapes a government lab and kills most of the population, and of the fight between good and evil among the survivors in the U.S. Filmed as a multi-part mini-series for TV. Reissued in 1990 containing the few hundred pages that the publisher made King shorten the book by in 1978. Collector's copy.; 8-7/16" x 5-3/4"; 823 pages; Signed by Author .

The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition [Coffin Signed Limited]

King, Stephen

New York: Doubleday, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. xxviii, 1241 pages. Pretty much everyone's choice for King's best book, and the rare uncut version that may actually be better (most books would be improved if they were shorter--following Elmore Leonard's dictum, "Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip"). This signed, numbered limited edition is also one of the most sought-after King limited editions, in large part due to its clever design. Only the large print run, 1250 copies, keeps this from being ridiculously expensive (instead of just a regular level of expensive). The book, a darkly religious novel, is bound in black leather, not unlike a Bible. It is laid into a black wooden box, giving it the colloquial name, "the coffin edition"--which also suits a book with a body count north of 5 billion souls. Each copy is signed by King and the illustrator, Berni Wrightson, on the limitation page. First edition (first printing). A fine hardcover copy; no dust jacket, as issued. Glassine tanned as usual. Wooden box fine. In the original mailing box. Copy 979 of 1250.

The Stand.

King, Stephen

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1978. First edition of the author's fourth novel. Thick octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Stephen King on the title page. Fine (without the usual sag associated with this bulky volume) in an excellent dust jacket with light rubbing. Jacket illustration by John Cayea. "I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess.... The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand came from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke." "There is much to admire in The Stand: the vivid thumbnail sketches with which King populates a whole landscape with dozens of believable characters; the deep sense of nostalgia for things left behind; the way it subverts our sense of reality by showing us a world we find familiar, then flipping it over to reveal the darkness underneath. Anyone who wants to know, or claims to know, the heart of the American experience needs to read this book" (Fiona Webster). It was the basis for the 1994 American television miniseries. King also wrote the teleplay and had a minor role in the series. It was directed by Mick Garris and stars Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer, Rob Lowe, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Jamey Sheridan, Laura San Giacomo, Molly Ringwald, Corin Nemec, Adam Storke, Ray Walston, and Matt Frewer.
