About This Item
London: Jarrolds, 1955. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. The Trouble with Cinderella: An Outline of Identity (Jarrolds 1955). First UK Edition. Black cloth with silver lettering to the spine. A book-plate on the front paste-down, a weak front hinge, offsetting to both sets of end-papers and foxing to the page edges and the early/late pages of the book. Overall a VG copy. The price-clipped D/W is VG indeed with slight fading to the spine and minor rubbing to the extremities. This long, romantic and thoughtful autobiography is regarded as one of the most substantial self-portraits produced by a jazz musician. Along with Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky, 1910-2004) was the leading clarinetist of the swing era, and a prominent bandleader as well. Gifted with a range of sometimes contradictory talents, Shaw led a complicated, frequently contentious life (he abandoned performing for a long time), and his early years were littered with a number of famous wives, including Lana Turner and Evelyn Keyes. The UK first edition is quite scarce.
