Treasure Island

By Stevenson, Robert Louis

Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. The story was originally serialised in the children's magazine Young Folks under the title The Sea Cook over a period of several months from 1881-82.

Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, Treasure Island is the classic pirate tale, known for its superb atmosphere, character and action. It is one of the most frequently dramatised of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perception of pirates is vast, including treasure maps with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders.

First edition identification and notes

Treasure Island was first published as a book by Cassell and Company of London in 1883. First editions have 1883 as the year of publication on the title page with the copyright page left blank. First editions also contain multiple points of issue, including (but not limited to): "Dead Man’s Chest" is uncapitalized on pages 2 and 7, “rain” instead of “vain” in the last line of pg. 40, the “7” is missing from the pagination on pg. 127, "worse" for "worst" in the third line of pg. 197.

Other collectible or notable editions

Published in 1927, Edmund Dulac illustrated an edition of Treasure Island for Ernest Benn of London. With only 50 numbered copies printed on handmade paper and signed by Dulac, a copy of this edition sells for upwards of $10,000.

Treasure Island

Stevenson, Robert Louis

London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1927 Illustrated by Edmund Dulac. First trade edition thus. Finely bound in modern three-quarter maroon calf and maroon cloth boards, five raised bands to spine, stamped and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. About fine with a few spots scattered throughout, else fine. First published in 1883, Treasure Island is a pirate adventure story narrated by Jim Hawkins, a young innkeeper who is swept up in a struggle for a treasure map when pirates ransack his inn, finding himself on a ship with Long John Silver and other deckhands. Notably, the novel is credited with helping to establish some of the modern pirate tropes that are still prevalent today, like the treasure map marked with an X, and the one-legged man with a parrot companion. Treasure Island is the basis for numerous adaptations, including more than seventy film, television, and stage productions. Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was a French-British illustrator known for his illustrations in children's gift books in the early 20th century. His career in book illustration began in 1905 when he was commissioned by Hodder & Stoughton to illustrate a deluxe edition of Jane Eyre, and he went on to illustrate numerous other children's books. Despite a decline in popularity of illustrated gift books that began in 1913, Dulac continued working as an illustrator. Treasure Island was one of his last publications.. Illus. by Dulac, Edmund. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
