Niagara Hardcover - 1993

by Richard Watson

First line

HIGH ABOVE THE GROUND, THE WIRE.

From the rear cover

Jean Francois Gravelet has lived much of his life performing on a wire high over the heads of admiring crowds below. But the reputation of a tightrope walker is as precarious as the possibility of a misstep, and Gravelet decides to leave France to make his name by risking the ultimate fall: a wire walk across the great American landmark, Niagara Falls. Widowed schoolteachers in Nebraska of 1901 don't have many options. So it looks as though Anna Edson Taylor's life will be just what people expect, until she answers an advertisement offering a brave "man" a chance to put his name in history books by riding inside a barrel over Niagara Falls. When Taylor is the only person brave enough to ride a wheelbarrow across Gravelet's high wire, the exploits of the two are irrevocably entwined. They tell their stories in parallel, but contradictory, narratives, speaking eloquently about the natures of men and women, how to find balance in life, and living together on the edge of the abyss.

Description:
Coffee House Press, 1993. Hardcover. Very Good. NICE BOOK! MILD SHELF WEAR ON DUSTJACKET, NO MARKINGS. "Publishers Weekly: Watson's ( The Runner ) sparkling, delightful new novel--about a French tightrope walker and a widowed Nebraska schoolteacher who meet in Niagara Falls, N.Y., become lovers, perform daredevil stunts and go their separate ways--is a witty meditation on miscommunication between the sexes. French high-wire artist "The Great Gravelet" fancies himself an embodiment of perfection and a gallant ladies' man. Anna Taylor, cigar-smoking, obese, grittily independent and 15 years Gravelet's senior, becomes a prop in his act: he strings a cable across the Whirlpool Rapids next to Niagara Falls and pushes her across in a wheelbarrow on Independence Day 1901. Later Anna, determined to be known for something and unable to convince Gravelet to teach her the wire, becomes the first person to go over the Falls in a barrel and survive. The two accidentally meet again in… Read More
