Very Good 1714, Hamburg Germany. The first ever printing of this seminal classic. The first time that Bible stories were printed specifically for children. Thus it was somewhat "cleansed" before publication. One source I found says that the incest and murder committed by David were altered, among other things. It is four inches by seven inches, and includes 104 plates from engravings, 52 in the Old Testament, and 52 in the New Testament. There are 400 pages of text, plus the eight page introduction. Also, all the plates are on unnumbered pages, for a total of 512 printed pages. The book is in its original calves leather boards and spine, which are still attached but fragile. All pages, including all front and rear endpapers, are present. The last two plates have been repaired at the edges, and several pages inside have edge tears or stains, but they are minimal. London: [No Imprint], 1778.. [2],73,[1]pp. Large octavo (signed in 4s). 245 x 155mm. Contemporary, perhaps original marbled wrappers, wholly untrimmed and largely unopened. Some offsetting from the wrappers to adjacent endleaves at edges, crown and toe of spine of wrapper chipped away, some occasional smudges, otherwise a lovely copy in original state. Second (enlarged) edition, after the much more modest list printed by William Bowyer in 1777. The entire work is an amplification, according to the subtitle, of "A Manuscript List of English Bibles, copied from one compiled by the late Joseph Ames. presented to the Lambeth-Library by Dr. Gifford ....," with "later Discoveries of several Learned Gentlemen ...." The identity of the actual printer is not recorded in ESTC. Ducarel was the first lay librarian at Lambeth, serving some 27 years beginning in 1757. While well represented institutionally, copies, particularly when in this near original condition, are uncommon in commerce. ESTC T96267.

Xantes Pagnino was a 15th-century Dominican friar known for his studies in biblical philology. While his edition of the Hebrew Bible is considered his best work, he published a biblical thesaurus which was written to aid in the reading of the Hebrew texts. This 1578 printing of Pagnino's Hebrew/Latin "Thesaurus linguæ sanctæ" was published by Christopher Plantin.

London: G.E. Eyre and W. Spottiswoode [circa 1890s]. (Hardcover) Very good. Diamond 32mo. Volume bound in brown leather with raised bands on the spine, stamped in blind front and back, metal clasp, and metal Star of David (enameled in blue and green and with the letters "IHS" in the center in gold), inner dentelles in gilt. All edges gilt over red, coated brown endpapers. The covers are lightly rubbed, and there is an owner name on the front blank page. Although the book has been well used, it is not badly worn. Stuttgart: Maler Renz, 1850. Hardcover. Fair. [2] p., 40 leaves of hand-colored illustrations with captions from the New Testament; 22 cm. Publisher's dark brown cloth with gilt-stamped cover title and decoration. No date of publication. Little is known about the publisher Maler Renz, but it was active in the mid-19th century. This title is not in WorldCat. The title page verso contains a poem by German poet Albert Knapp (1798-1864). Very scarce. In Fair Condition: cover is rubbed and slightly soiled; lacking number 9 and 2/3 of number 10; numbers 30 and 32 are detached but present, with chipping along fore-edges; number 34 lacking lower corner, without loss of illustration or caption; numerous closed tears; finger soiling throughout.

Summary: Germantown: Christoph[er] Saur, 1743. 4to (9.5 X 7.5 in). The first Bible printed in America after Elliot's Indian Bible of the 1660s, and the first American Bible printed in a European language. A very good copy in original beveled boards.
Description: There are several clippings pertaining to this edition of the Bible mounted on the front pastedown. Printed general title page (1743) laid down with loss to the lower border and imprint, which have been replaced in facsimile. Ornamental headpiece at the beginning of Genesis. Text in two column black letter, with cross references and short summaries at the beginning of each chapter. The text is based on Martin Luther's version by way of the 34th edition of the Halle Bible, with books three and four Esra and three Maccabees supplied from the Berlenburg Bible.
