Early binding/rebinding in mottled calf with raised bands. Shows Society of Jesuits stamp. First Estienne edition the Greek lyric poets, accompanied by a Latin translation. Estienne's text was extremely influential and established itself as the major edition in the sixteenth century; its text was reprinted constantly by the Geneva branch of the Estienne Press (1566, 1586, 1599, 1600, 1612, 1626), and by Plantin in Antwerp (1567). The second part (here bound first) consists of the extant poems of eight other Greek lyric poets: Alcaeus, Sappho, Stesichorus, Ibycus, Anacreon (whose lyrics had been discovered and first printed by Henri Estienne 6 years previously), Bacchylides, Simonides, and Alcman. This verse drama deals with a family's quarrel over the naming of a son, Shenandoah Fish, which is obviously analogous Schwartz's name, about which he was quite sensitive. Inscribed to the poet Theodore Morrison. "Ted, from Delmore, October 1941." Illustrated by Frederico Castellon. Printed by George Hornby at The Domesday Press, New York City. 28 pp. 8vo., plain paper wrappers, wire saddle stitch. In a dark blue dust jacket, illustrated on the upper wrapper in grey-blue. Internally clean and fine; however, the dust jacket is sunned at perimeters and on the lower panel, with some light edgewear. Inscribed copies by Schwartz are uncommon, and this is a very good copy, inscribed by him.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
