Little Brown 1954 third printing. 896 pages. Listed in Garrison and Morton (4914.2), "Remains Penfield's most substantial scientific work". Quite hard to find.

Wilder Penfield was a highly respected neurosurgeon of the last Century. American born, and educated at Princeton and Oxford, Penfield achieved his highest acclaim while working and teaching in Montreal (he was once dubbed the greatest living Canadian). Herbert Jasper, a neurologist, was a research partner of Penfield's at McGill University.

Condition of the book is Very Good. The binding is straight and sound. Inside pages are complete, clean, and unmarked. Condition issues include the prior owner's name in ink on the free endpaper, and some sun lightening at the top of the spine (where the DJ was chipped).

Condition of the dust jacket is Very Good Minus. The DJ has been price clipped. It shows moderate shelf wear and edge wear, with small chips at the top and base of the spine. It is protected in a new mylar cover.

This landmark text will make a great addition to the discerning collector's medical library.

Edges of title page are age-toned. Book plate re-mounted on inside front cover belonging to Clements C. Fry, M.D. (1892-1955) Professor of Psychiatry at Yale and a well known collector of medical prints. Bound in full modern calf done after an early style. Old spine label is preserved. John Haslam (1764-1844) was an Apothecary or Medical Officer at Bethlem Hospital (Bedlam) and afterwards the Governor of St. Luke's Hospital. Haslam was one of the most knowledgeable practitioners in his field. However, according to Hunter and Macaplpine his attitudes toward patients were rather "harsh and unfeeling." In 1816 scandals arose over poor patient care at Bethlem Hospital and Haslam was dismissed from his position (perhaps unfairly). The "Observations on Madness" was first published in 1798. Haslam, however, considered… Read More

1756 Scientific Letters GALILEO Physics Comets Italian Vellum Lorenzo Magalotti
Lorenzo Magalotti was a 17th-century Italian scientist known for his philosophical treatises, his studies of Galileo, and translation of Milton's "Paradise Lost". While these contributions were important, he also wrote a series of scientific letters which were first published in the 18th-century. These letters offer descriptions of his physics experiments including his experiments on light, testing Galileo's theories, the effects of cold and snow, blood circulation, and even his observations on the 1664 comet.

1779 Causes of Disease Italian Morgagni Pathology Medicine Human Anatomy RAREGiovanni Battista Morgagni was an Italian anatomist whose studies on pathology lead him to publishing one of the most renowned works on the subject – 'Causes of Diseases' (1761). This book established fundamental principles of disease origination and dispersal. Garrison and Morton's account of this book should not be overlooked."one of the most important of the history of medicine, Morgagni was the true founder of modern pathological anatomy. The work consists of a series of 70 letters reporting about 700 cases and necropsies. As best he could, he correlated the clinical record with the post-mortem finding. Morgagni gave the first descriptions of several pathological conditions."Item number: #5196 Price: $750MORGAGNI, GiambattistaJo. Baptista Morgagni P.P.P.P.
