1874. BALLANTYNE, R.M. THE GORILLA HUNTERS: A Tale Of The Wilds Of Africa. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co., 1874. Small 8vo., embossed brown cloth, stamped in black & gilt; 408 pages. First first English edition was publsihed in 1861 and, although I have no bibliographical information, this may be the first American edition. A boy's adventure novel by the Scottish writer. It was novels like this that added to the speculation that man was decended from the apes. Good (bit of edgewear & little spotting covers, but gilt & black stamping still pretty nice; text pretty clean & tight; ink name stamp on front endpaper & small bookplate on front pastedown). $85.00.
