Quarter bound purple cloth gilt with patterned yellow boards, shelf wear only, internally fine. A fable by a poor unlettered Persian peasant determined to learn English by consorting with American and British troops during World War II. The editor and introducer, John Hemming, was one of the British officers for whom Ali Mirdrekvandi, surnamed Gunga Din by the officers, worked. Robert Charles Zaehner (1913-1974) who was acting Counselor of the British Embassy in Teheran about 1950 and shortly later appointed Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford, for whom he also worked briefly, describes him in the Foreword as, "one of the most extraordinary human beings I have ever met...."..
