Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, Undated. Assumed 1951 Edition. Hardcover. Brown Embossed Boards with Cream Lettering on Front and Black on Spine. Original, Excellent Condition/Brodart Covered. First published in 1840, and revised in 1841. There are several English translations. This edition, translated from the Russian by Martin Parker, was published by Foreign Languages Publishing House in 1947 and republished in 1951 and 1956. Ilustrated by D. Shmarinov. Illustrations to "Maxim Maximych" by V. Komarov. 'A Hero of Our Time' is a book comprising five stories - Bela, Maxim Maximych, Taman, Princess Mary, and The Fatalist - linked by a single subject.
Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814 - 1841) was a Russian Romantic writer, poet and painter, sometimes called "the poet of the Caucasus", the most important Russian poet after Alexander Pushkin's death in 1837 and the greatest figure in Russian Romanticism. His influence on later Russian literature is still felt in modern times, not only through his poetry, but also through his prose, which founded the tradition of the Russian psychological novel. In 1838 Lermontov started working on A Hero of Our Time, a novel which later earned him recognition as one of the founding fathers of Russian prose. Lermontov was killed in a duel at the age of only 26. In his lifetime, Mikhail Lermontov published only one slender collection of poems (1840). Three volumes, much mutilated by censorship, were published a year after his death in 1841. Yet his legacy, of more than 30 large poems, and 600 minor ones, a novel and 5 dramas, was immense for an author whose literary career had lasted just six years.
Dementy Alexandrovich Shmarinov (1907 - 1999 ) was a Russian artist known primarily as an illustrator. His work, characterized by a realistic accuracy, is a graphic interpretation of literary works, noted for the credibility of the transmission of dramatic situations and socio-psychological characteristics of his heroes. Shmarinov has authored illustrations for the works of Alexander Pushkin Tales of Belkin, 1937-49, Dubrovsky, 1949, Captains daughter, 1949-74, The Queen of spades, 1949-76, for the novel of Leo Tolstoy War and peace, 1953-76 and others.
174pp. DJ has pieces missing but now in ptotective cover, no inscriptions, clean and fresh internally.
