London: The Hakluyt Society, 1944. Two 8.75 inch 8 vo volumes (578 pp total). Second Series No. LXXXIX (xcvi, 228 pp) and No. XC (pp 229-578) of this work issued for by The Hakluyt Society and translated from the originals by the notable scholar of Portuguese cartography, Armando Cortesao. All 42 illustrations / maps present; some folding. Tome Pires' 'Suma Orient' was arguably the most important account of the East in the first half of the sixteenth century. There is a detailed introduction and preface to each of the works. Some scuffing to boards, minimal edge soiling, vol. 1 mildly shaken, but the gilt-embossed covers are sound, and the interior is very good or better. Several scattered stamps of the Rand Club, Johannesburg, 24 Jul 1946. Folding map in rear of each volume. Minimal browning to page edges. This is an increasingly uncommon pair.. First Thus. Decorative Cloth. Very Good.
