New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1914. The History of Scranton, Pennsylvania and Its People is an outstanding quality set of the most important and valuable study of the history of Scranton and the surrounding area. This first edition set rarely comes on the market, we have never seen this set in such fine condition. These are the must have volumes for those who cherish the history of Scranton and the surrounding area. This huge two volume set was published in 1914 by the Lewis Historical Publishing Company, New York City. The two volumes are in amazingly fine condition. Both volumes have red boards with pebbled leather backing and corners, bright gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Both have stiff marbled end papers and marbled edges to text block and were issued without dust jackets. Volume 2 description follows Volume 1 specifics. Volume 1, an almost perfect copy, shows very light shelf wear to the boards. The very tight binding reflects that the book has probably never been read. The boards are bright, no chipping, rubbing or bumping. Book has frontis, plates, portraits, maps, well presented in 532 pages. There is very minimal foxing early in Volume 1. Volume 1 presents chapters focusing on the genesis and early development of Scranton, the early railroads, the development of coal mining, sketches of early founders, early plat information with infrastructure details, growth between Providence and Slocum Hollow, businesses in the mid-1800's, Scranton's poor district, charities, early amusements, more on early prominent citizens, the church in the development of the city, the medical and legal professions, local municipal organizations, military service, fraternal and secret societies, banks and financial institutions, Scranton Board of Trade, list of postmasters, religious and benevolent associations, the music scene, societies and clubs, famous notable events and newspapers and newspapermen. We doubt you will ever find a better copy of this amazing volume. It is difficult to believe, but Volume 2 is in better condition than Volume 1. Volume 2 boards show practically no rubbing, the gilt on the spine is a little brighter than Volume 1. There is a small sticker on the inside back cover top left, a small ding to bottom of back board, otherwise this book is perfect. Volume 2 sets forth 695 pages of extensive biographies of Scranton pioneers and founders. These biographies are very detailed, with an extensive index at end of book. Volume 2 is not as sexy as the wonderful Scranton history presented in Volume 1, but the true study of history revolves around those making and participating in that history, not just important events. This is why Hitchcock wrote Volume 2 with such intensity. The full page portraits of the prominent pioneers and founders are stunning. As with Volume 1, the almost perfect book and tight binding indicate to us that this book has probably never been read. As with Volume 1, we doubt you will find a finer copy. We specialize in books about Scranton and the surrounding area.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Issued Without Jacket.
