Facsimile of the first issue dustjacket with the hand correction in ink, of the 'e' in the misspelt 'Dodgeson', on the rear flap. Original green cloth, titles and Tolkien's own 'Mountains and Dragon' design to spine and both boards in blue. Very nice and clean map endpapers, front and rear. The slightly faded green top stain is still evident, with a spot/drip mark noted. The Tolkien designed dustjacket (facsimile) and the book are housed in a custom green quarter morocco leather clamshell case with gilt stamped mountains, title, author, and JRRT monogram to spine. Frontispiece and 9 other illustrations in black and white by the author. Spine a little toned, with a little wear of the cloth at the base of the spine. The rest of the cloth is only lightly soiled, with a spot to the front panel above the title. Still a nice square copy, without names or writing. A very nice 1st Impression without any restoration. Text block is very clean and white, no foxing, neat and clean. One of the classics of 20th Century Literature. Further digital images can be supplied on request. While a mail carrier in Montana, Frank Grouard was captured by the Sioux, During the six years he was with them he learned their language and was familiar with Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. Grouard served as a scout for Gen. Crook during the Sioux Campaign of 1876. The author relates not only the personal experiences of Grouard but also his account of events such as the Battle of the Little Bighorn as told to Grouard by participants.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
