London: Red Pale Press by the Curwen Press, 1967. 67pp. Ilus., frontis. port. Original full vellum, tied, and paper slipcase. First and only edition limited to 50 numbered copies. A very handsome and lavish edition, being one of forty-four copies bound in vellum, printed by the Curwen Press for the Reed Pale Press. The entire edition consisted of only fifty copies, with the "regular" copies bound in vellum. Brooks, a devout and temperate man, left Elyria, Ohio, and travelled with a partner as part of the Middleburg California Company to the Sacramento Valley in 1849 via St. Joe, where they decided to join a larger party of Buckeyes. The trip consumed five months (less two days), and took the company by way of South Pass, Salt Lake, Goose Lake, and the Pitt River. The text consists of Brooks' verbatim journal. Destined, no doubt, to be one of the most uncommon of all modern overlands. MATTES 373. MINTZ 53. KURUTZ 80.
