Description:
London: T. & W. Boone, 1847. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 3vol. 8vo. [3], iv-vi, [1], 2-432, [2]; [3], 2-427, [3]; [3], 2-410, [2] pp. Contemporary half black morocco over marbled boards, spines in six compartments with gilt lettering and decorations, marbled endpapers and pastedowns; top edges gilt. Volume one illustrated by a frontispiece portrait of Henry IV. Oxford DNB, Barczewski, Stephanie L., "James, George Payne Rainsford". George James was a prolific British Romantic novelist and politician, and spent time in both the U.K. and the United States. He was appointed historiographer to William IV in 1836, and spent the 1840's writing novels and histories of important British and French figures. A nice set of James' Henry IV, a monumental figure in the history of English monarchy whom some historians speculate precipitated the War of the Roses. A Very Good set with a few spots of wear to the extremities.
