Joannis Caspari Bencard, 1699. Hardcover. 4to. Stiff vellum over boards. 1,015 pp. plus indices. Old late 19th or early 20th century paper library label at heel of spine; vellum is age darkened to a medium yellow with occasional darker patches from the oils of many hands. Library stamps of the Cappuchin monastery in Harlem, New York on front pastedown endpaper and on title page. Old bookshop advertisement and pricelist pasted in at front pastedown endpaper; a few notes pencilled on front and rear pastedowns. Binding is original but lacks metal clasps on rear board. Light uniform toning to paper not affecting legibility of the text. Overall a very good copy of this work by the famed Italian orator Paulo Segneri the Elder, (1624-1694). "After Saint Bernardine of Sienna and Savanarola, Segneri was Italy's greatest orator. He reformed the Italian pulpit." (John C. Reville, THE CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA, volume XIII (1912) Robert Appleton Company.)
