London, 1918. This unique First World War item is the original M.B.E. medal, with accompanying ribbon and presentation case, awarded to Miss Etheldreda Morris in 1918 for contributions to munitions manufacturing efforts, along with a typed letter to Morris from Winston Churchill dated May 1918 informing her that she would receive the honor as a result of his recommendation. It is noteworthy that this award to a British woman for her wartime work dates from the year that British women first gained the right to vote, partly on the political strength of their First World War contributions. The letter is typed on embossed Ministry of Munitions stationery, dated “May, 1918” and reads: "I have had much pleasure in recommending to the Prime Minister that you should be appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and I am glad to learn that the King has approved the recommendation. Pray accept my hearty congratulations on this recognition of the valuable services rendered by you to the State." The typed valediction is “Yours very faithfully” followed by Churchill’s signature in black ink. The letter bears a single vertical and single horizontal fold, consonant with original mailing, as well as mild spotting, wrinkling, and a .25 inch closed tear from having spent life stored atop the MBE medal within the presentation case. The original, leather-covered Garrard & Co. leather presentation case is scuffed but fully intact. Within is the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire M.B.E. medal, with purple bow ribbon. The printed personal calling card of Miss Etheldreda Morris is also laid in the case, along with the letter from Churchill. Etheldreda Morris was born in the Welsh town of Penbryn, the daughter of Welsh poet Lewis Morris. During World War I she was Chief Lady Welfare Superintendent at NEF (National Explosives Factory) Pembrey, also in Wales. Pembrey had been the site of a Nobel dynamite factory since the 1880s, but during the war it was upgraded to manufacture the more powerful TNT. Situated near sand dunes, the factory was ideally placed to minimize the damage that would have been caused during an explosion. Churchill was Minister for Munitions from 1917 to 1919, and was thus the head of the department for which Morris worked in 1918. The M.B.E. she received was part of King George V's 1918 Birthday Honours, published in the London Gazette in early June 1918. Churchill took a tortuous path to his position as Minister of Munitions, where he served from July 1917 to January 1919. He began the First World War as the powerful First Lord of the Admiralty, but was scapegoated for the Dardanelles disaster and forced out in May 1915. By November 1915, Churchill was serving at the Front, spending part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. His May 1916 return to London saw "no upsurge in his political fortunes" and left him criticizing the war effort from an unaccustomed "position of political weakness and personal isolation" much as he would two decades later on the eve of the Second World War. (Gilbert, Vol. III) By May 1917 there was growing parliamentary opposition to the Government. "Lloyd George knew that Churchill's aim was to return to a position of authority, but that if no place were found for him, he would continue to attack the Government's war policy." (Gilbert, Vol. IV, p.15) Whether for Churchill's talents, desire to silence him, or both, Lloyd George invited Churchill to return to the Cabinet as Minister of Munitions. True to form, Churchill proved "eager to involve himself in as wide a range of discussions as possible" (Gilbert, Vol. IV, p.32) and implemented major reorganization of his Ministry, optimizing production and asserting exactly the sort of influence his detractors resented. Churchill would prevail in his difficult return to power, assuming control of the War Office as Secretary of State for War and Air by January 1919.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed U.S. first edition set of the 1916-1918 volumes of The World Crisis, Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the “War to end all wars”. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. The U.S. is the true first edition, as U.S. Volume I publication preceded the British. Jacketed first editions are quite scarce - jacketed U.S. editions even more so. Charles Scribner's Sons originally issued the 1916-1918 volumes as a two-volume set. This set is very good plus in very good dust jackets. The bindings are extremely clean, marked only by slight dulling to the bottom edges of the spines. The contents are clean and tight with… Read More

London: National War Aims Committee, 1918. First edition, only printing. Pamphlet. This exceptionally rare speech pamphlet contains the speech of 25 April 1918 Churchill delivered in the House of Commons as Minister of Munitions during the First World War. This is the only copy we know of in private ownership. Churchill began the First World War as the powerful First Lord of the Admiralty, but was scapegoated for the Dardanelles disaster and forced out in May 1915. Description:
London: Andrew Melrose, 1920. First edition. Hardcover. This improbably scarce book is the first edition of the memoirs of First World War flying ace Walter Noble. The book is particularly noteworthy for a substantive introduction by Winston S. Churchill, then serving as Secretary of State for War and Air. This 1920 first edition is not to be confused with the 1977 Cedric Chivers large type edition, which is both substantially larger and considerably less sought and valuable. Condition of this copy is good plus, sound and complete. The navy cloth binding is square and tight, though with overall scuffing and blistering of the cloth to the upper rear cover. The contents are substantially clean, age-toned but with no spotting. An illustrated previous owner bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown and the rear pastedown shows some scarring, as if something adhesive were long ago removed. The binding is fitted with a clear, removable, mylar cover. Credited with 12 aerial victories, Walter Noble was… Read More

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a six-volume British first edition, first printing set of Winston Churchill’s history of the First World War. Full sets thus, in first printing dust jackets, are quite scarce. When these volumes were published, between 1923 and 1931, booksellers often discarded the dust jackets. Even those spared by booksellers often did not survive. In particular, the 1911-1914 first issue jacket (with a blank rear face) is quite elusive and the 1916-1918 dust jackets are notoriously fragile. The Eastern Front is scarcer still, with substantially fewer copies printed than the preceding five volumes and a jacket nearly as fragile as those for the 1916-1918 volumes. 1911-1914 The binding is square and tight with minor shelf wear to extremities and light, superficial moisture damage to the lower right of the front cover. The contents show no spotting, mild age-toning, and light shelf dust to the top edges. The sole… Read More

Description:
Toronto: Macmillan, 1927. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This is the first Canadian edition of the third volume of Churchill's acclaimed history of World War I. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a unique position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front; Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty until 1915 and then, after bearing blame for the Dardanelles tragedy, served as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. The events covered in this volume include Churchill's time commanding a battalion in the line. The Canadian issue of Churchill's World Crisis was published in Canada from the American plates and is very similar in appearance. However,… Read More
