Chicago: Lakeside Press, 1993. First Thus. Original Cloth. Fine. Two volumes in one. pp: lviii, 389, index; 30 plates from photographs, 2 maps in color. The first title, THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF JAMES W. MARSHALL, is a biography by George Frederic Parsons. Marshall was born at Hopewell, NJ, went to California in 1845, participated in the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt, and discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848. In the second book, an autobiography, Buffum tells of going to California in 1847 with the 7th Regiment of NY Volunteers during the War with Mexico. At the war's end, he heard of Marshall's gold strike, went prospecting, and eventually became a California journalist. 6.75" x 4.25"
