Edward John Thompson (1886-1946) novelist, poet, journalist and historian of India was a liberal advocate for Indian culture and self-determination. He was friendly with Tagore, Gandhi, Nehru and other Congress leaders so was an unusually good channel for interpreting India to England though perhaps his voice was not so influential there. Nehru sent him a tender message of affection and respect on his deathbed in 1946..
