Light rubbing to the extremities with a vertical crease to the backstrip, but a quite presentable copy. Scattered pencil marginalia and marginal bracketing else clean. A very good copy. Hitchcock 350. Originally issued in 1853, this is a collection of Downing's editorials from his periodical, the Horticulturalist, 1846-1852. All 8 plates present (per Hitchcock) with many in-text engravings throughout.

Putnam and Company, 1853. lxxi + 557 pp. 8vo., green cloth with gilt spine lettering and cover vignette (fir tree). Good, spine sunned to light brown, gilt spine lettering faded. Minor shelfwear to spine and corners, a few faint pale spots to cloth. Front hinge starting. Engraved title page and frontispiece heavily foxed; moderate to light foxing throughout. Posthumous volume collecting the greater number of Downing's pieces in the "Horticulturist." Includes texts on landscape gardening not published in his "Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening." Wonderful collection.
