Nürnberg, Bauer und Raspe, 1841. 4to. Title page, half title, 62 pp. [numbered (3)-34, 35a-36a, 35-62], 11 finely hand-coloured plates [numbered 1-10, 16].= Rare part of the largest and longest-running malacological series, started by the German malacologist Heinrich Carl Küster (1807-1876, the main author of this part) in 1837 and abandoned in 1920. The half title indicates that this is (a part of) Band I.17; according to the collation given in "2400 years of Malacology" (Annex 2: p. 18) this is the start of part I(17)(a). To be exact: this is the part written by Küster (partly in collaboration with Wilhelm Dunker) and published between 1841 and 1850; and the much later (1878) first addition by Clessin, who was forced to use text page numbers 35a-36a to create room for an extended list of genera preceding the species descriptions. It contains the descriptions and illustrations of then known species of Physidae, Planorbidae, and a few others. Between 1884 - 1886, Clessin produced another 376 pages, and 44 plates (here not included), partly because more species became known, but perhaps also reflecting the influence of the "Nouvelle Ecole" which demanded excessive splitting on the species level. Small blindstamp in the top margin of the half title, some light spotting in the text, the plates clean. A good copy. Nissen ZBI, 2723.
