Scranton, PA: Self Published, 1973. Fine first edition in very good dust jacket, this book was not reprinted. It was privately published by the author in 1973. Tan cloth boards, tight binding, 150 crisp pages with black and white photographs. Blue dust jacket is scuffed front, rubbed at tips, a small closed tear top and bottom of spine, light rubbing to edges, the front upper left quadrant shows an old crease. The author was a Scranton attorney whose family was identified with the city's industrial development from the earliest days. Mattes served as City Solicitor, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, a founder of L.I.F.E. and Chair of the Municipal Airport Commission. There is interesting information about how Scranton developed on property owned by coal mining companies. The narrative of the origins of the mine cave-in and subsidence problems is very interesting. Much of the book is autobiographical based on family and personal experiences. The author presents a detailed history of Scranton and biographical information on the Mayor's of Scranton. There are numerous fine photo portraits of City leaders. We specialize in books about Scranton and the surrounding area.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good.
