New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, [printed by] the Knickerbocker Press, 1928. [12], 330 pages, plus frontispiece and numerous other photographic plates. Original blue pictorial cloth stamped in gold. 21 x 14 cm. Very good plus in near very good dust jacket. A few tiny spots of foxing to edges with the slightest impact on the surface of the leaves, small spot to the bottom edge. The jacket is bright, but shows two light scratches to spine panel, several short tears, a little creasing at the edges, and some soiling. FIRST TRADE EDITION. There was also a limited, signed edition issued the same year. Captain Hermann Köhl (1888-1938), Major James C. Fitzmaurice (1898-1965), and Baron Günther von Hünefeld (1892-1929) made the first westward crossing of the Atlantic by air, from Ireland to Greenly Island, Canada, in April 1928. They flew in the "Bremen," a Junkers W33 monoplane. Köhl, the pilot, was a native of Bavaria who had flown with the German air force in World War I and now worked as a professional aviator. Fitzmaurice, the navigator, was a former R.A.F. pilot (1919-1922) and commandant of the Irish Air Corps. Hünefeld, of East Prussia, was the owner of the aircraft and the financier of the expedition. The book is divided into three parts with each man contributing a separate account of his experiences. Scarce in the dust jacket.

Laid in is a handwritten note from Gene Emme to NASA archivist Lee Saegesser, with whom Emme had worked closely for years in the NASA History Office.
