Winchester, MA.: Ernest Dudley Chase.. Copyright 1942.. Color pictorial map, 15 x 35 1/4 inches, on sheet 16 x 36 1/2 inches. Professionally mounted on linen, minimizing abrasion to fold lines. SIGNED IN PENCIL AT LOWER LEFT by the artist. Light discoloration along right vertical fold. An inspirational World War II map of the world designed and published by Ernest Dudley Chase with poetical note at lower centre: A Battle Map, to set the stage For "total war" on land and sea; And, in the border, just a hint - A prayer - for total victory! In addition, the cartouche declares: "Certain Victory Will be Ours!" The five border vignettes feature 'A Yank Tank,' 'Coast Artillery,' 'Mobile Field Gun,' 'Flying Fortress' and 'New Anti Aircraft Gun Mounts by Westinghouse.' Germany and Japan are marked in black. There is extensive treatment of the Pacific Islands, a major battle field. It is signed in pencil by the mapmaker with his full name Ernest Dudley Chase (his maps were often signed E.D.Chase). This map is often seen with red accents (to the V signs in the border, in the vignette images at map edges, to the title lettering) which are not present on this copy. The blue coloration is also different in quality from other examples (here a deeper, brighter color) suggesting that there were different printings made of this iconic map, designed to inspire the patriotism of the American public. .
