New York: Henry A. Wallace , 1948. Typed Letter SIGNED on his personal stationery, dated May 17, 1948 - "Dear Mr. Martin, I am taking the liberty of sending you a copy of an open letter which I have addressed to Premier Stalin, outlining the basic principles and practical steps which I believe make possible a general settlement of outstanding differences between ourselves and the Russians by conference and peaceful negotiation." The next 2 paragraphs speak of Wallace's hopes for an end to the Cold War following the recent exchange between Ambassador Smith and Foreign Minister Molotov, and the tragedy that would result if the Administration rejects the Russians offer to negotiate. He finishes - " I am therefore addressing you and other members of Congress to ask that you urge the President to act in good faith upon Ambassador Smith's statement that "the door is always wide open" to Soviet-American discussions by accepting the Molotov proposal for a conference to settle outstanding differences. Only if that proposal is accepted, and our representatives sit down with the Russians to arrive at a peaceful understanding, can America regain the moral leadership in world affairs that alone can make peace possible. Sincerely yours, Henry A. Wallace Enclosure". Enclosed is the original 11" x 17" open letter, 3 folds, Near Fine, tiny corner crease. The typed letter also Near Fine, paper clip indent top edge. Henry A. Wallace was the 33rd Vice President of the United States (1941-45), the Secretary of Agriculture (1933-40), and the Secretary of Commerce (1945-46). He ran for President in 1948 as the Progressive Party candidate, finishing 4th behind Harry S. Truman, Thomas E. Dewey, and Strom Thurmond. Joseph W. Martin, Jr.(R) Mass. was Speaker of the House in 1948. By 1948 Wallace, who had been replaced by Truman as Roosevelt's Vice-President, had come to believe that the Cold War was Truman's fault. His open letter to Stalin was met with approval from the Russians, but his belief that communists and non-communists could work together, and his acceptance of Communist Party help in organizing his Progressive Party bid, at the height of the House Un-American Activities Committee, doomed his candidacy. An outstanding Cold War letter.. SIGNED BY AUTHOR. One Page,Folded. Near Fine.

December 17, 1923, The White House - to Lew Wallace, Jr., (son of Lew Wallace, Union general in the American Civil War, governor of the New Mexico Territory and author of "Ben Hur")- "Dear Mr. Wallace, The growth of thrift and saving in this country promises well for our future. Only through sacrifice and hard work can we attain the cherished things in life. This means we must work and save. The progress of the United States Government Savings System, in giving to all our people an opportunity to invest in safe securities, is most worthy. By placing Treasury Savings Certyificates on sale in post offices, banks and trust companies, the Government has made available to everyone a security of unquestioned soundness. Their widespread sale makes for better citizenship, as each purchaser holds a stake in his Government.
