1937. VERVE, An Artistic and Literary Quarterly... Director: E. Teriade. Paris: Verve, 1937. Volume 1, Number 1. (December, 1937). Profusely illustrated in color and black and white. 128 pp. Large 4to., illustrated paper wrappers. This, the first issue of the American edition of this French publication, has a cover specially designed by Matisse and a series of original color lithographs illustrating the four elements by Fernand Leger, Joan Miro, Rattner and Bores. There are heliogravure illustrations of photographs by Man Ray, Brassai, Louis Guichard, and others. Also, among much else, a double-spread photograph of Picasso's "Guernica" taken by Dora Maar, which had only recently been exhibited at the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris Exhibition of 1937, an article by Andre Gide, "A few Reflections on the Disappearance of the Subject in Painting and Sculpture," and previously unpublished letters and drawings from Cezanne to Emile Zola. All texts are in English, translated (mostly) by Robert Sage. A very bright, clean copy with the subscription order form housed in the bright, paper-covered box, with the illustration by Matisse reproduced on the lid. The box is split at the corners and has a few tears and some soil.

Description:
Paris: E. Tériade, 1939. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Paris, E. Tériade, 1939. Large quarto, 140 pages with numerous illustrations, many in colour (complete with the original lithographs by Matisse and Derain, but - curiously - lacking pages 41 to 44: 'The Book of the Hunt by Gaston Phébus, Comte de Foix, Fifteenth Century. Twelve Hunting Scenes'). Flush-cut card covers (featuring a wrap-around design by Georges Rouault); spine a little rubbed, with a few horizontal cracks and short splits at each end of the front joint; stitching a little loose; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy. The artistic component of this number includes three original lithographs by Henri Matisse (a double-page work, 'The Dance', with two individual 'figures of skaters' on the verso), as well as three drawings by him; seven small lithographs (on four pages) by André Derain; six full-page colour lithographs from 'Tacuinum Sanitatis' (a fourteenth century book of health); and photographs by Brassai and… Read More

Paris: E. Tériade, 1938. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Paris, E. Tériade, 1938. Large quarto, 132 pages with numerous illustrations including original colour lithographs (details below); complete as called for. Flush-cut card covers (featuring a wrap-around design by Pierre Bonnard); spine slightly rubbed, creased and sunned; top edge lightly foxed; overall an excellent copy. Published in Paris in both French and English editions (with the texts translated by Robert Sage) under the directorship of E. Tériade (an ex-patriate Greek, Efstatios Eleftheriades), 'Verve' was 'devoted to artistic creation in all fields and in all forms'. 'That the illustrations may retain the import of the originals, "Verve" will utilize the technical methods best suited to each reproduction. It will call on the best specialists of heliogravure in colors and in black and white, as well as of typography, and will not disdain to employ the forgotten process of lithography. The luxuriousness of "Verve" will consist… Read More
