First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Printed on one side of a single strip folded accordion style and attached by its leading edge to upper cover. 22 photogravure images on 12 pages. Edge wear, else unusually bright gilt and near fine interior.

Possibly including an image of Billy the Kid. According to Dykes the cowboy image, which also appeared in Chittenden's Ranch Verses, strongly resembles the only known image of Billy the Kid.

This is the tale of a Frenchman and two boys who journey from Le Havre to California in search of gold. We are told of their hard work at the gold mines, the joys and travails of mining life, and their sundry adventures. Bound in elaborate, pictorial black cloth, stamped in gilt and colors on both covers and on spine; inner rear hinge repaired, otherwise near fine condition. 7.75" x 4.75" This is Dan Volkmann's copy with his Golden Bear bookplate. Volkmann spent 39 years collecting a complete first-edition set of Californiana books called the Zamorano 80--a feat accomplished by only three other collectors. [Gumuchian 1159. Sabin 12350. Descriptive text includes a short history of the Los Angeles Fire Department: "In May, 1875, Engine Company No. 2 was organized."

Good condition: original red cloth binding, showing mild age toning, title on front cover, floral patterned end papers.

Many photos of early Los Angeles fire stations, with horse drawn equipment.

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.

The pamphlet contains an article on the Death of Brigham Young and an obituary from the Deseret Evening News, August 29th and 30th, 1877. Plus "Last Moments of President Brigham Young," "Lying in State – Preparations for the Funeral," "Funeral," and "Respect and Condolences." The pamphlet prints the remarks of the Elders at the funeral service, the hymns sung, the procession, etc. Front cover slightly soiled, small ink stain on back cover, interior clean. Fine. Rare.
